unusual 2-man mechanic

playing in a good 16U/18U tournament in central/eastern NJ.

once there was a baserunner, field ump positioned himself in the infield,
halfway between pitchers plate and second base.

ive seen this in baseball before, but never fastpitch softball.

is this consider proper/normal?
everywhere? or just in NJ?

this only occured in one of 5 games we played so far.

Softball umpire should never be inside the diamond prior to the pitch, always behind the fielders. My guess is it was a baseball umpire who is just starting to do softball or got roped into doing games because they were short officials. The softball diamond is just too small for umpires to be inside, they dont even come inside in LL baseball with small diamond.

Have you seen this is Baseball? Sounds like bad Idea go get in frount of fielders.

(Even 8U both SB and BB, no umpire got in frount of fielder that I remember)

It is a baseball mechanic that works there because of the size of the field and a grass infield. Doesn't work in softball because of the field size and a skinned infield. To the best of my knowledge, no softball organization uses such a mechanic. Odds are this is a baseball umpire (who shouldn't be there) or a softball umpire who believes he knows better than everyone else in how to umpire the game. (BTW, he shouldn't be there either)
