Scenario 1:
With one out, B2 Sally Smith strikes out. Before the next pitch is thrown, the defensive coach appeals to the umpire that the batter should have been Jane Jones. After conferring with the offensive coach, it is determined that Sally Smith was an unreported substitute for Jane Jones. Mary Molina is due to bat next. What is the call at this point?

Scenario 2:
Same as above, however, after conferring with the offensive coach, it is determined that Sally Smith batted out of order and Jane Smith was the correct batter. Sally Smith is due to bat next. What is the call at this point?

This was something that I saw over the weekend. The call went in favor of the team I was cheering for, and I initially agreed with the call. However, after discussing with a few other people, and taking some time to review the rulebook, I think it was the wrong call.

In 1 the out stands and Sally Smith is officially entered into the game.

In 2 the at bat is negated and Jane is out for not batting in the proper order, Sally is the next batter

How about this scenerio.

A team batting 9 has numer 7-8-9 due up.

If they put up the 9th hitter and she pops out but no one says anything until after a
pitch has been thrown, is the 1st batter now batting in order.

Yes, if the batter out of order is not appealed before another pitch then #9's at bat is legitimized and #1 is the correct batter.

This is a time when the defensive coach needs to just keep their mouth shut. They aren't going to get an additional out. If Sally had reached base safely, then it's time to say something.

Recent experience...

Bating order of opposing team indicted "flex" in the 9th spot and "DP" in the 10th spot. During the game, the player listed as the "flex" came up to bat with the bases loaded, and hit a deep fly ball (caught against the fence) that scored 2 runs on the tag up and subsequent error. After her at bat, our HC brought it to the attention of the ump. "Flex" was declared out for batting in the incorrect order, and the runners were put back on the bases where they were at the start of the at bat.

Should have never happened because the umpire should have never accepted the lineup card as it was written. The DP must be one of the 1st 9 batters and the flex must be in the 10th spot. Should have been corrected before the lineup became official and the game started. Yes the coach screwed up, but the rest of it is on the umpire.

No argument from me on that. The umpire certainly had a chance to review the lineups and get things sorted out before the game.

Invalid lineup aside, did they really call batting out of order (BOO) or was it unreported sub since flex can bat for DP? Flex isn't in the batting order unless DP exits.

If a team can't keep there batting order straight I have no problem taking an out, but I'm not a fan of getting one because it's an inexperienced coach who is learning the
whole DP/Flex thing.

Player listed as DP stepped into the batter's box after Flex's at-bat.
