USA/ASA rule set.

One of the coaches in my league says umpires have been telling him at tournaments if he uses the DP/flex, no courtesy runners are allowed. All I can find if the DP bats for the pitcher or catcher, there can't be a courtesy runner for the DP.

What am I missing?

If that is what umpires are telling the coach then they need to go back and study the dp/flex rules. As long as the team has substitutes that have not yet participated in the game, any player that is the pitcher or catcher and batted for themselves is entitled to a courtesy runner.

Either the coach wasn't understanding what the ump was saying, or the ump was wrong.

You are correct that you cannot use a CR for the DP. However, you can use a CR for the P and C, even if you are using a DP/Flex lineup.

I'm leaning towards the coach not understanding what the umpire was saying. I'll clarify it with the coach before B/C Metros this weekend.

An additional note regarding CR that some people don't get...

If you use Suzy as your CR for your P, she is locked in to the P. P can run for herself, but Suzy cannot also run for C.

If the DP is playing the pitcher or catcher position they are in fact eligible for a courtesy runner.

If you use Suzy as your CR for your P, she is locked in to the P. P can run for herself, but Suzy cannot also run for C.

That is going to depend on the rule set. In USSSA the courtesy runner can run for either, but not in the same inning.

Thanks for the clarifications, Comp.

If you have only 10 players on the lineup card and are using the DP/Flex, then no, you cannot have a courtesy runner. ;-)

Maybe that was the situation?
