Rec 14u. He is a dad, that I let coach the bases. I am assistant coach, pitching coach and I keep the score book.

So, far, he has told our own deck batter, that she doesn't have to leave the circle, when a foul ball is heading her way. I said that she is not protected in the on deck circle. He gave me a dirty look.

Last week, the HP ump called infield fly rule, after the ball was on the ground. It shouldn't have been an Infield Fly, but that doesn't matter. My coach said that Infield Fly has to be called, when the ball is in the air. I said that it does not. He said "I played first base." I said "I did too."

A grandpa yelled at me, during one game that all of my runners are turning the wrong way, on a single. I ignored him, because I didn't feel like arguing.

But, on the first 2, what is the right call.? Yes, I googled and didn't find it.

The on deck batter is never protected anywhere. If they defense needs the space in the on deck circle to field a ball, the on deck batter better get out of the way.

Infield fly rule can be called at any time, it can even be invoked after the play is over. If the umpire forgot it was an IFF situation and put the offensive runners in jeopardy they can apply the rule after the fact, call the batter out and put any runners who may have been put out because of the non call back on base.

Runners can turn any way they want after overrunning 1st base, but, if they make any move toward second the umpire judges as an attempt to advance they are subject to being put out.

Lots of respect to you for putting up with all that and not flipping out on anyone. Whether you're right or wrong in any given situation that must get pretty old.

I'm a rookie coach on here by many standards, but time to have a parent meeting. Your there to teach the kids to play your not there to multitask and teach parents the rules. Have a meeting about what you have already mentioned and cite the rule addressing it. Explain your more than willing to learn and if they have a question during the game about a rule, ask that they make a note and look it up at home. If their correct or can't find it next practice you will discuss it. It does the players no good with you distracted or doubting you self and the players hearing misinformation.

The ODC is not a safe haven. And not only is the ODB responsible to give way to the defense making a play, s/he is responsible for clearing any piece of equipment (bats, rosin bag, towels, etc.) to avoid an INT call if such equipment affects the defenses ability to make a play.

Last week, the HP ump called infield fly rule, after the ball was on the ground. It shouldn't have been an Infield Fly, but that doesn't matter. My coach said that Infield Fly has to be called, when the ball is in the air. I said that it does not. He said "I played first base." I said "I did too."

The prescribed time to call an IF is when the ball reaches its apex, but we all know that isn't always possible. Speaking ASA/NFHS, the lack of a call does not negate the application of the rule and its effect.

BTW, playing a position no more qualifies one to claim they know the rules than voting qualifies you to be a qualified public office holder. And yes, I know that is a low bar comparison :)

I'll be grandpa gets all his knowledge from playing little league ball 70 years ago :)
