This just happened last night. HS Ball. Runner on 2nd. Hard grounder to F6. Fielded, then Runner on 2nd runs into F6. F6 still makes the throw to First and beats batter by two steps. Interference called R1 out, but R2 is at first. Is the play dead after the interference was called? I would think you would still have the opportunity to get the out at first. I wasn't sure why. Thanks in advance!

When interference is called the ball is dead immediately, so there was no play at 1st. Runner committing the interference is out, batter/runner is awarded 1st base.

As long as the contact is not intentional...right?

It does seem harsh to reward the offense for interference but it would not be fair to continue the play since if the ball is live all runners would be free to advance at their own risk.

Interference is interference wheiter intentional or not.
However stiffer penalties can apply if it is intentional interference.
In the video two outs should have been called, IMHO.
Plus an ejection.

I agree, in the OP scenario the runner could have been called out assuming there was a tag and not a brush against the back or something...but the ump does not really have time to process that and delay the interference call waiting to make sure tag was applied and ball does not come lose etc.

Speaking of which if in OP scenario if runner is right there why isn't she just applying the tag to the runner for the lead out anyway?

This is JV HS Team. SS is outfielder on her travel team, not that much infield experience. Her dad said "well that's one way to get the lead runner..." after the play.

Intent would probably be necessary. The only way to rule the BR out would be if the umpire judged that the INT was meant to break up a double play.
