if a player fails to handle a fairly easy pop fly,
but is somewhat unskilled (compared to her peers)
do you still score it as an error?

example: lazy pop fly over 3B head that she could have ranged backward and caught easily if she had the skills.

I just am not sure if the idea of a "routine play with normal effort" gets pro rated based on the ability of the player?

I tend to score these as errors, but am now wondering if I am scoring unfairly.

thanks

I'd probably rule those hits. That's assuming you mean that the player lacked the skill/athleticism to get herself in position to make the catch. Although it's painful sometimes, I don't charge errors for lack of range.

A lazy pop up over the 3b head that a good fielder can field, but the current fielder is no where near catching. Thats a hit, and I'm a pitchers dad, so that tells you something. Now if she gets back there and is under it and then drops it, its an error.

"Normal effort" is prorated based on the average ability of ALL players at that level of competition. 10U rec players aren't held to D-I standards, however they are held to the ability of their 10U rec peers.

Another aspect is errors aren't charged for misjudgment of the ball, so you need to factor that in too. If she didn't go back far enough because of misjudgment, you tend to see a late adjustment to recover from it. If she simply didn't go back far enough to get in a good position to make the catch, you apply the "normal effort" standard.

What if the outfielder is just plain lazy? I scored one an error the other night because the outfielder was lazy. She went half speed and the ball landed by her feet. I felt it was not a normal effort.

Thoughts?

We had so many of these these weekend. I scored them as hits but it was painful. One easy pop fly our right fielder just watched bounce in front of her cost us 3 runs and the game.

Dd's team has an outfielder that has range but is scared of the ball so she lets it drop every time. Makes me want to scream. Error?
