Rules about walks?

Last night's middle school game, NFHS rules. Batter walks, passed ball. Batter/runner rounds first goes about 5-6 strides and stops. Looks for ball, continues to 2nd base.

Ball is being retrieved by catcher when runner rounds first. She continues to 2nd on throw from catcher to pitcher. Pitcher throws to 2nd, runner tagged but obviously safe. BU calls her out.

During play, defensive coach is calling for throw to first saying runner is out for "too many steps toward 2nd and then stopping". BU says he should have called her out when she stopped, but let her run.

This could not have been a Lookback Rule violation and I don't think anyone on the field thought that. They all believed she was out for turning toward 2nd on a walk and then stopping. Offensive coach agreed she was out.

Is there ANY rule that is different for a baserunner that walks instead of hitting the ball? I thought she was safe on 2nd.

A walk is a live ball and no different than if the batter had hit the ball and put it in play. Nothing says she has to stop at 1st, she can run all she wants on a walk she just cant be put out before getting to 1st. Once she rounds it toward 2nd, she is fair game and can be played on.

Even if the ball was in the circle and she stopped after she rounded first she is still not out. She gets one decision after the LBR is in effect (ball back in the circle).

She can stop and then go to either 1B or 2B.

Terrible on so many levels...I would get both coaches and the umpires together and if he was going to stick by the ruling protest.

but she needs to make that decision quickly. I think the rule says something about "immediately and directly" continue forward or go back. If she stands there for however much time is longer than "immediately" she can be called out.

If she overruns 1st, then makes a step towards 1st she is not allowed to go to 2nd.
She can turn anyway she wants, it is her step that matters.
