If she overruns 1st, then makes a step towards 1st she is not allowed to go to 2nd.
She can turn anyway she wants, it is her step that matters.

Assuming the ball is in the circle with the pitcher when the runner turns around and takes a step toward 1st.

Back on the dirt...
but she needs to make that decision quickly. I think the rule says something about "immediately and directly" continue forward or go back. If she stands there for however much time is longer than "immediately" she can be called out.

Again, only if LBR is in effect. It doesnt sound like the pitcher had the ball in teh circle.

Only if the look back rule is in effect

Exactly, and knowing when the LBR is in effect and not in effect is key. In the OP the BR went to 1B on a ball four pitch that went by F2 to the backstop. F2 was still retrieving the ball when the BR past 1B so the LBR is not yet in effect. The BR could overrun 1B, come half way back, then break for 2B when she realizes the pitch got away.

The OP says the BR was advancing from 1B to 2B when the ball was thrown from F2 back to F1. The LBR would not be in effect until F1 caught and held the ball in the circle. Th OP is unclear if and when the BR may have stopped between 1B and 2B but if it happened before F1 got the ball back it doesn't matter. If at the time of F1 receiving and holding the ball in the circle the BR was stopped between bases she must immediately make her choice and go nonstop one way or the other. If the BR is moving between bases when F1 recieves and holds the ball in the circle she can keep moving, and may stop once but then must immediately choose a direction and proceed nonstop. Yes the amount of time in "immediately" is left to the discretion of the umpire; personally I give em about little no enought for me to say to myself "which way are you going....out". It's not long. But keep in mind this all has to happen while F1 just stands there in the circle. When a runner is caught between bases that rarely happens. As soon as F1 starts to play on the BR between 1B and 2B the LBR evaporates.

Right. I was responding to GunnerShotgun's comment about only getting one decision once the LBR is on.

Yes, with the runner advancing toward second and made a play on her. LBR is not even a question in this play. Well, at least, it shouldn't be

Not sure I follow but I think we are in agreement. It's still on decision once the LBR is in effect overrun or not.

Ummm... Nope. She could do a waltz out there. Has no bearing at all. The only thing that matters is what the runner does once the ball is in control in the circle. Then the LBR is in effect.
