i was hit with a thrown bat while catching a high school game. Tore my Achilles tendon, sidelined for the rest of the season. It's rare but it does happen.

coaching tee ball I had a seriously problem with a large number of my team throwing/releasing the bat, and I considered it very serious, since as the coach I was standing in pretty close proximity to them, and had taken a few. before one game, warned them all that if they threw the bat, they were out (and in our tball, even if you were thrown or tagged out, you stayed on base, we batted entire order every at bat, last batter ran all the bases). happened three times that game, once to my own DD. all three times I pulled them off first to go to the dugout.

pretty much stopped it.

I was coaching 1st base last week. I have a spacey player, who went up to bat. The previous hitter's bat was laying there, so "Spacey" picked it up and threw it 60 feet, toward our dugout.
Not good.

I think maybe a bat toss is something coaches are going to have to start teaching in practice, ie how a batter going to plate should toss a bat towards their dugout (ie grip one end, and toss underhanded, but without any end over/around end motion). also amazed I seemed to be the only coach in our division that taught girls when they scored, they picked up the bat and brought it in once play was over.

My DD was catching a couple of years back, and a big athletic girl with a small bat threw the bat backwards toward her. The knob caught her in the mask, the barrel caught her in the stomach. She was uninjured, buy my hairline receded almost an inch.

It was coach pitch, so the ump was up the first base line instead of behind the plate. I came out of the dugout to politely remind him to at least warn her since he seemed content to stay quiet on the matter. In our league it's a warning and then and out. If it's happening often, then the whole team gets one warning, then anyone is called out after that point.

Often in fast pitch it's a younger inexperienced player who is just so darn excited that she hit the ball. The bat comes flying back toward F2 and myself. I let the play finish then go grab offensive coach to join me for a chat with player. These batters are not trying to hurt anyone and usually have no idea they hit the F2 or me with the bat. NFHS games team gets a Team Warning but in USA I will still warn player if she careless throws her bat after hitting ball.

Then you get the throwing bat in anger; which I see more often in the slow pitch game (by guys of course). Depending on situation that might be a warning or an ejection. Last one I had was a a slow pitch called strike three and the guy threw bat at backstop. It stuck in the chain link fence. He did not remain in the game.
