Was wondering if it is required that the base umpire keep the amount of how many balls and strike a batter has?
Help with any input?

Opposing batter had at the time 3 strikes but home plate had batter for 2 . I had her at three so so we questioned each other, so already being frustrated with the home plate umpire should the base umpire have step up and told the plate umpire what he had as a count.

What about a scorekeeper? When I kept the score for DD's team last summer there were a couple umps who came to me for clarification on the count or the score.

The primary responsibility for keeping the count belongs to the Plate umpire.
Almost all umpire training that I have been exposed to encourages the Base Umpire to keep the count as well to assist the Plate Umpire if necessary.

Unlike a smaller ball game where umpires brag about not using indicators and often scoff at the suggestion a BU be involved in keeping the count, softball encourages the BU to keep the count and help the PU when necessary since they are partners, not two independent officials

Well after the inning I asked the base umpire did he have the correct count and he said yes . So I asked him why he didn't help out when there was discussion and he said it wasn't his job. So in the end isn't it the job of the umpire crew to help each other out for the sake of the game.

That is a pitiful answer. Granted, he shouldn't run in and take over, but there are methods for umpires to communicate. It probably wouldn't hurt if the PU was asked to verify the count

The base umpire is correct - it's not their job to interject with the count. However, if I'm the plate umpire, and if there's a question, then I should be asking my partner.

I've lost the count before. It happens.
