ASA rules and it happened today.
Batter hits ball into outfield and heads for 2B
Shortstop is straddling the bag and as she is just about to catch the ball the BR crashes into her while coming into the base standing up, which causes the fielder to miss the throw.
Is there a violation here or just a train wreck?

It is OBS on the SS.

Is straddling the bag obstruction?
BR had access to the bag but chose not to slide and barreled into F6.
Is that obstruction?

Something similar happened to us this weekend. Our runner didn't slam into her but had to run around her (fielder was on the front side of the bag). Umpire called obstruction and awarded 3B even without contact. That's actually the first time I've seen one award it without contact though I know contact is not supposed to be required. Our girls will NOT run into fielders. They refuse despite having permission to do so if they're in the way. lol

"Despite having permission?"

Seriously?

Having been told that if a girl is in the base path, it's not their job to go around. Do you disagree?

ETA: I'm not talking encouraging them to run over girls, or to intentionally make contact to get a call they shouldn't otherwise get. Only that they do not have to go around the fielder if she's in the base path.

Actually, yes, I do disagree. Wholeheartedly.

By rule, the runner is protected from being called out if she is obstructed. And if I see a runner run into a fielder when she could have avoided it, then I'm going to find out who will substitute for her once the play is over. There is zero reason for any player to initiate contact.

Period.

Furthermore, if I ever heard a coach give such an instruction to a player on the field, that coach will be ejected and reported to the Tournament Director.

Then perhaps umps should start giving obstruction calls to girls who slam on breaks and try to get around. Our girls literally will do anything to avoid contact and rarely will they get the call.

No argument here! And when that happens, talk with the umpire. Find out why they failed to call the obstruction, and if their answer is anything other than "coach, I'm sorry, I didn't see it," inform them you're playing under protest.

And if that doesn't work, talk with the TD about it. Push for some changes.

I call obstruction. A lot. It happens. A lot!
