If my memory serves me I believe they changed the rule in travel ball where if you wrote the wrong number on the lineup card but the correct batter was batting there was no penalty.

Is the rule similar in NCAA? What is penalty, if any, if wrong number is written on lineup care but correct batter has batted.

"travel" ball doesn't have rules. In ASA, it has not been a penalty for as long as I can remember umpiring that brand which has been a few decades. The NCAA notes that the name takes precedence when identifying the player to the line up card.

I really never have understood the name thing. In tb with so many bush league tactics used it wouldn't surprise me if a lowlife coach pulled a "sue your up, but coach it's not my turn, I know go ahead and if the umpire asks your name is tina, remember it's tina". Changing jerseys would be a little more obvious. I have coached in several tournys where the line up card said dark green #15 sue and light green/blue #15 Julie due to pick up player or wardrobe malfunction. Never bothered me. I have caught batting out of order and ump asked their name and the name is right but that is the first time I caught a good look at the girls face. Just always made me wonder. The only thing I really noticed in most TB about the players is other than size where one player may stand out was all rest seem to have blondeish/brownish/reddish/blackish hair with bow or ribbon.

Thanks. Can you cite the NCAA rule so I can use it for reference.

Rule 5.6 covers the Lineup Card. While it doesn't explicitly say in the text of the rule that name takes precedence over number, it does say that Omitting the last name makes the player ineligible (note #4).

Rule 8.3.2 covers an inaccurate lineup card, and includes a note that "A player's name supersedes a listed uniform number (See Rule 5.6)"

Well, the umpire isn't going to ask a player her name. If protested, the umpire will go to his/her line-up card and check the previous batter and then the batter due up. If the number isn't correct (and the other team will know this or they would not have protested), that will be the improper batter. If the number is correct and the defense still protested, I'm going to want to see a form of ID.

Please note, I'm referring to championship play. What other tournaments may do is their business.

I was watching an A&M game last week and Jo Evans pulled a slick one. Early innings, bases loaded, Show up to bat and pops out. Jo Evans comes out to talk the PU. PU then converses with his fellow umps. PU goes over to visitor dug out (MS State I believe) and tells the coaches something. Show gets to bat again! Come to find out the Pitcher was in the game as the wrong number. Evans must have caught that and waited for the right moment to pull that rule out of pocket. I have never heard of that, but the umps always want to know what number is pitching and when they are subbed out/in. They ended up getting one run out of that inning.

Knowing the rules is very important...at every level.
