Runners on 1st and 3rd. Runner on 1st on the base, runner on 3rd with a large lead when the catcher returns the ball to the pitcher after a pitch. Pitcher does a hard fake to third. Runner on 3rd dives back to the base. Seeing the fake, runner on 1st breaks for 2nd, takes 2-3 steps, realizes the ball wasn't actually thrown and stops. Umpire immediately calls her out.

I suppose the look back rule was immediately back in effect once the pitcher's arm stopped moving from the fake throw but I would have expected the umpire to give the runner a second or two to figure out that the pitcher still had the ball?

Not an umpire and it sounds like a needed to see it.

I do not know if the rules state when the LBR comes back into affect after a fake throw so I do think the runners should have an extra second or two but not be exempt from it.

I not sure if I have an out based on the description. But, the description leaves out what the runner on 1st base did after she stopped.

The fake throw is an active play by the pitcher and the runners are allowed to move as they wish...with a another stop and then immediately move to a base.

Sounds like the runner @ 1st moved with the fake throw and then stopped....the description doesn't indicate if she moved back to the base or just stood there.

I'm looking for more information.

The runner was called out almost immediately once she stopped. Clearly fooled, once she realized the pitcher still had the ball she turned to go back to first but was called out before making more than a step or two in that direction.

In what position when R2 left 1B? Reason I ask is that if R2 hesitated in leaving the base, the umpire may have considered the "fake" to be in the past and the LBR back in effect.

Based on that specific description with the runner moving back to 1st base after the stop, I would have allowed the runner to return to the base.

But, I wasn't there and didn't see the play in live action.
