Had this happen this weekend. ASA. Our batter hits a deep fly ball ball that wasn't caught. I'm coaching first base send the runner on. When batter rounded second base I was unsure if she touched it as it wasn't clear from my angle but I certain had my doubts that she did touch it. Ends up with a stand up triple. No appeal from the opposing team. Runner steals home during next at bat. After the inning was over BU comes over to me and tells me he told the scorekeeper not to count the run because she missed touching 2nd base. Fine with me as I already stated I had my doubts. We were up big and it didn't matter but my question is should she have been called out for going to the dugout without touching all bases? She was not called out just that the run did not count.

The run counts. Defensive team needed to appeal missed bag before the next pitch, and the runner would have been out. Once a pitch is thrown, its like she touched second and she is no longer in jeopardy for missing second. I've never seen a run score and not be counted when it should have been.

I wasn't sure what to think of it. I thought it was a strange call. I asked BU "Don't they have to make an appeal?" He says "there were no other runners on base and it was clear the ball wasn't going to be caught so that's all I had to watch she missed it by about 2 inches" Again it wasn't going to matter so I left it at that.

I agree run should have been appealed at the time of the play.

Would this be subject to protest given that the coach learned about it after the inning and not before the first pitch following the call?

Have to agree with the comment about wondering where coaches come up with some of the stuff they do, and in this case an umpire. Obviously has no clue.

Once a runner has passed a base, they are considered to have legally touched the base until there is a proper appeal and the appeal must be made prior to another pitch legal or illegal. Once another pitch was throw, that runner legally touched 2nd and all advancement was legal. Yes the run scores and yes you should have protested as soon as the umpire told you they informed the score keeper to not count the run. You may want to contact the tournament director and ask them to please inform the umpires UIC he should have his umpire read up on his rules.

This ruling definitely could be protested since it is a misapplied playing rule. There's no basis for calling this runner out or removing the run without a valid appeal by the defense. In fact, just the opposite is true- the rules say the run counts.

Thanks guys. I was about 99% sure the defense had to make an appeal before the next pitch. There certainly was no appeal made. I try to avoid arguing rules with the Blue as it rarely does any good but I guess I should have stuck to my guns on this one. I wasn't going to protest as we easily won the game. At the time of the play I beleive it was in the 4th inning we were up 10-0 and DD had a no hitter going against them. Too bad she gave up a single up the middle in the final inning. :(
