Comp,, MTR, Ajay & others: Are there things that coaches and players do that you wish they would NOT do? During games do you ever say to yourself, "I wish they would stop (blank)", or "I wish they would (blank) more often".

A few of my favorites...

Coaches walking onto the field in the middle of a live ball situation just because the coach called "time"...
On-deck batters running out to get the bat and not paying attention to their own runners...
Coaches who haven't cracked the spine of the rule book in 25 years - or ever - because "it's just like baseball"...

All the above and coaches who have to come out and question every call, and have no clue why but in my area they seem to like to nickname kids blue or use blue in some play they are calling. Some games it seems like blue is being yelled non stop and can never figure out if they are really trying to get my attention.

Theatrics. Arguing and acting like the umpire's strike call just cost your team the world series isn't going to help. You want to discuss something, no problem once the play is over, request time and discuss the last play and only the last play.
If you don't get exactly what you want, continuing the argument isn't going to help.
If you believe the umpire kicked a rule interpretation, protest the game. Don't use it as a threat, simply inform the umpire you are playing under protest.

Stalling the game so the other team can't bat again when time is running out, I see this in wrestling too to help their kid rest

Yeah, you definitely don't have to be an ump to hate this. The momentum-killing timeout is a chump play IMO. I hate it. But, I expect it. Seems like it's all some teams have to hold onto... /snark

as an umpire why would you care about this? would you rather end a game on time or go extra time? just enforce the rules ... its not illegal to call a time out with 2 minutes to go.

There are some coaches that I wish would put half the effort into coaching their team that they are using to try to "work" me for calls

Teams that have a coach who seems to be the designated "mouth". This coach is going to have a comment on every call, good or bad, and make sure everybody knows what he thinks. This coach is usually some low level assistant, so if s/he gets tossed, its no big deal to the team.

The thread is about pet peeves. Are umpires not allowed to have pet peeves? Is it possible for them to enforce the rules and also have opinions or pet peeves, or should they be robots who enforce the rules without any feelings or opinions on how the game is played or people should be treated? It would be different if the poster said that he disallowed timeouts with two minutes to go. He just said it was a pet peeve. As a parent/former coach, I'm not a fan of it either.

No, it is not illegal to REQUEST time with 2 minutes to go. The umpire is not required to grant it :)

And it can be a pet peeve because it is the umpire who is unnecessarily placed in the middle. For this, and some other situations, coaches seem to rely on the umpire to make up for their issues. This is why I have been a proponent of a "time + 1 inning" rule if it is necessary to have a clock on the games.
