 I would like some of you knowledgeable score keepers to enlighten me on the guidelines and rules of thumb concerning awarding earned
runs. I realize this can be a subjective call with a lot of grey areas. I am also aware that some scorekeepers cook the books. Some of the situations that comes up are. Does it matter how the runner got on base to start with, such as a runner who reaches on an error and eventually scores on a base hit ? Then there is the reverse, the runner reaches on a base hit, walks or HBP and eventually scores on an error ? The other situation concernes how a runner got into scoring position. Runner reaches either error or base hit and the advances on error's or hits and eventually scores. Thanks in advance for your time and valuable input.

Basically, an error is determining earned runs is considered an out. For example, first runner reaches base on error (this is one out for ER purposes). Next two hitters strike out. Now no matter what happens there will be no earned runs that inning. So, the next five hitters can hit HRs and there will runs given up but no earned runs.

Now let's say a hitter leads off with a triple. Next two hitters strike out. Then a passed ball allows the runner to score. Then a strike out. This again would be no earned runs.

Let's take the same example above with the first batter hitting a triple. Now instead of a passed ball it's a wild pitch. This would result in an earned run.

I know that this does not cover every circumstance but, I hope, that it is a good start.

Interesting thread. So, just to be sure I've got this straight.... If the first three batters reach base on errors, then the cleanup hitter goes yard, that's 4 unearned runs, not 3 unearned and one earned. Right? No matter what happens in the same half an inning, no subsequent runs are earned?

A little caveat, assuming there’s a pitching change between HR’s #2-#5, the HR’s allowed by the RP would be earned to the RP and unearned to the team.

Well that explains some of the ERA stats I've seen. I learned something today. Thanks.

Correct. As stated previously, SK should reconstruct the inning to determine whether defense should have made 3 outs with ordinary effort. HRs and otherwise ERs scored after defense had the chance to record 3 outs are unearned.
