Routine double to left center, settles at the fence, a perfect throw to second will still be too late. She slides in safe just ahead of the throw.. On her way to second, she is stightly touched/obstructed by second baseman in the base path. 2B field ump calls obstruction, awards batter-runner third. I thought inadvertent obstruction resulted in remedial action, not punitive. Agreed?

Obstruction is the award of the base the runner would have reached absent the obstruction. There is nothing punative about the rule, it is only to put the runner where they would have been if not for the hindrance of the defense.

I agree. the batter-runner NEVER WOULD HAVE reached third and never even thought about it. This umpire BLEW it. Thanks.

Liners to left center NEVER result in a triple in 18U with 215 foot fences. The play was bang bang at second.

Comp, If an umpire did observe obstruction but felt the runner would not have advanced further than they did what is the ruling?

I take it your question is in regard to the op, the runner was obstructed between 1st and 2nd, was safe at second but the umpire judged that is as far as the runner would have advanced?

If I have it correct, there is nothing to call. The obstruction was indicated and the runner reached the base they would have. At that point the game just continues.

Generally speaking, I used to think the same until I was proven wrong this week at the NPF Dallas Charge vs USSSA Pride game. Batter hits a liner to the LC gap and legged out a triple. Mind Blown!
