I wrote down the wrong number for one of my players on the official lineup card. The player in question played 2B for the first few innings. I brought the 2B in to pitch in the fourth inning with a runner on 3B. After her first pitch the other team protested.

The result was an illegal pitch and the runner scored.

It was PGF rules (HS rules).

I argued that she wasn't an illegal substitute as she was already in the game (defensive change). I thought at most it should have been a warning to the coach. I reported her to the ump when I made the change (moved her from 2B to pitcher) with her correct number and no one said anything until after the first pitch.

It ultimately didn't matter but it never sat well with me.

I'm almost certain that the name on the lineup card takes precedence over the number, in every ruleset.

Since you were playing PGF and PGF uses NFHS rules, it should have been a team warning, fix the number on the lineup card and play on.
If there are any other issues with the lineup card during the rest of the game, the head coach is restricted to the bench.

It is the name, not the number that takes precedence, however, NFHS has a separate rule that addresses corrections to the lineup card after it has been accepted by the PU at the pre-game.

FWIW....in ASA rules, the umpire would just correct the number and play resumes with no penalty.

Rule 3, Sec 1, Art. 3, Penalty. Ajaywill, does an umpire do anything to verify other than confirming they received the line up?

The lineup is ultimately the coaches responsibility to have correct. When it is handed to the umpire, we check it for obvious errors such as duplicate numbers etc and to make sure it is properly filled out. At that point, at least I do and most umpires I know do, ask the coach to look over it one more time and verify the lineup is correct. From that point on the lineup is official and if it has mistakes on it that is the coaches problem.
