Are there rules associated with the age of a batting helmet and at some point it needs to be taken out of service for either USSsA or national coaches fastpitch Association. I know in construction and hardhat times out after 5 years.

There are no dates on the helmets, as long as it has the NOCSAE seal and corresponding tag on the facemask and is not damaged in any way they are fine to use.

Men can wear their helmets a lot longer than we can. The products that young ladies put on their hair, is thought to break down the inside of the helmet. It is worth looking into.

Another comparison. In construction-if a hardhat takes a direct hit/blow you take it out of service and replace it. Cheap insurance type of thing. Not so in softball.

Must be something to this. DD goes through a helmet pretty much once a year. The outside will look fine but the inside will be toast.

However, they also recommend sending it to them or an authorized agent to be inspected reconditioned and re-certified every 2 years.

We have replaced our helmets every two years, but do it out of necessity more than for safety concerns. Helmet manufacturers change their designs and color schemes frequently, so finding replacement helmets for new players become difficult, and the inside padding becomes "funky" with use...

I hate having to buy helmets every year....but I've got a pretty rough group of 15 year olds, and they will flat out destroy them every year. Well, they look destroyed anyway. They probably are just fine structurally.

If it's one thing I've learned the hard way with girls...and not to be sexist at all....but the better they look, the more comfortable the are....and they play better. Nothing worse than a bunch of self conscious girls running around.

:) DD might try out for her HS Team this year, she still hasn’t decided. She has had the same helmet since 8U, I might need to loss it somewhere.
