With bases loaded, one out the batter hits a slow roller to the short stop who comes forward of the running run lane to field the ball. The runner moving from second to third passes behind the SS as she fields the ball she steps back and trips the runner causing contact. The umpire calls the runner out and send the runner who scored back to third. Was the umpire correct ?

looking forward to your feedback.

Sounds correct to me, the runner is responsible for giving the fielder the opportunity to field the ball, just because she is behind her does not mean she has fulfilled her responsibility, then again I am not the expert, but we will have one who will answer your question shortly.

Not sure why the SS took a step back but from your description of the play I would have to say the call seems like the right call. The runner does have to give room for the fielder to make a play on the ball.

Can you give more detail to why the SS stepped back?

We can only assume she was trying to draw an interference call, she would have had little chance to throw the runner out at first do to batters quickness down the line. The SS did not put her body in the line contact she step back with her leg to make contact with the runner. More of a tripping motion. Hope that helps.

If you are letting the ball play you its natural to take a step back, could be a bad hop or just trying to set your feet. I would think if it looked really unnatural to the umpire he would have not called it but otherwise sound like he got it right, but our resident umps have yet to weigh in.
