There are also girls that double slap. They are actually hitting the back of their hip, too. If they don't stop doing it, I don't work with them very long. I don't want people to think that I teach that. I tell them, to lead with the glove and not bring it down. If they are slapping as their hands go back, I just tell them to miss their hip.
My own DD started pitching like that and the coaches and I just decided that we wouldn't let her pitch, if she was going to insist on bruising herself and ruining her wrist. She stopped on her own.
Cat touches her hip, but the girls that I see (and I had one pitch for me in college) are making a loud popping sound that results in a glove sized contusion. Good luck.
thanks Amy, I could not remember if Cat said she does it or if it was something that she use to do.I myself was still star struck when my dd was at the clinic,so I might have missed some of what Cat said.
If you look at the following video of Bill at some of his lessons on Fastpitch TV (Episode 143) he covers some of the glove slap stuff.
Lots of interesting comments throughout the video. However he starts explaining the glove slap stuff at 4:50

Cat Osterman doesn't slap her leg. Nobody any good does that.
What about a stronger emphasis on the front shoulder heading towards homeplate? That really puts the brakes on the arm flailing sideways, which seems to be a trigger for the glove slap to ensue.
How hard it is to figure out that slapping your leg hard enough to bruise it is bad? Crazy, crazy, crazy...
"Slap" could mean a light touch of a glove to the leg, which many pitchers do. It could also mean a violent slap of the glove to the thigh, which only poorly trained pitchers do.
As to Osterman, she does lightly slap her leg when she throws.

Every softball parent has a chef's knife and a hockey mask in the trunk of the car.
Rubber Biscuit...are you talking about a post pitch leg slap or during the windup?
Well then, everyone should slap their leg.
