A curveball is a pitch that moves from left to right, when viewed from the perspective of the batter, or right to left, when viewed from the perspective of the pitcher. A curveball breaks away from a right handed batter.

Maybe as Ken suggests that she throws 70mph "in spite of" these mechanics but I'm sure she has tried pitching being more "open" at some point in her career but through experiementing with this more "closed" technique, realized it was the most effective for her.

Given her age, I'd say there's a good chance she was taught to slam the door from the beginning. That was more the standard 15-20 years ago. It's probably only been the last 10 to 12 years that staying open has been the preferred technique. I remember Ernie Parker's old VHS videos, which were pretty much the gold standard back then, advocating slamming the door. Videos from Cindy Bristow, Mona Stevens and others did as well IIRC. But again, I have no way of actually knowing. It's just speculation.

The batter in the video is a lefty.

I gotta tell ya--I agree that this isn't a curve. At release, the ball actually comes off the outside of her index finger. While it's hard to read the spin on the video, it isn't really spinning very fast. It looks to me like a screw release with some drop spin. Not a big deal, but I hope that's not a curve. No break into that lefty batter.

The fact that people are trying to figure out what the pitch she's throwing "is" by the direction they "think" the ball is spinning (which could be completely backwards from reality given the shutter effect of the filming) lends a lot to the state of pitching and perception in the sport.

IMO, if the ball isn't noticeably breaking, then it really isn't a breaking ball, no matter what sort of aerobics the wrist is doing at release. This is no different then the conversation so many coaches have every year with crazy daddies and their daughters with "6 pitches".

Uneo is obviously a very successful pitcher so this is in no way a detraction from her pitching, just a commentary on the discussion.

Closing the door produces a faster pitch? Can't say I understand the logic or lack of it thereof. I played men's fastpitch and the hardest throwers did not slam any doors. The not so good ones did.
