My dd and I have worked on Hillhouse peel drop. Not getting alot of drop as she lets go of ball too late, but her fastball naturally drops at times causing ground balls. I dont want to give up on pitch. Her high school pitching coach told me that she lost speed on her fastball due to trying to throw peel drop. I dont agree. Is it true that she will loose speed on her fastball? Just need some feedback to contiune to work on drop as I think she should. Or... should we give up on drop and throw rise? She is getting close to speed needed for rise.

There's one way to skin that cat. Give the turnover or roll drop a try.......It's a naturally faster pitch, and changes planes quite nicely when thrown correctly......

Example of planes changes of curve vs. roll drop in this drill session:

I threw the peel drop for speed and turnover for my off speed pitch. I have found it depends on the individual more than the pitch itself. I have a lot of pitchers who throw the peel faster than an other movement pitch and it has better movement. Then I have some pitchers who throw the turn over faster than any other pitch. I would try both and see which one is better fit for your daughter. When I say fit I mean she gets great movement and speed.

c'mon, there's no way to throw a rollover drop faster than a peel drop. When throwing a rollover, your hand drives over and down the front of the ball to make it spin downward -- it receives no thrust from the hand. The peel drop is simply a modified fastball in which the ball rolls off the fingers in a way that increases the forward rotational speed.
That said, I find the peel is harder for most of my students to throw effectively. The rollover generally is a more user-friendly method. And a little less speed on the ball helps the ball to break downward.

Thanks for the responses. Coach wants her to throw turnover drop. Im affraid of injury. Probably shouldnt be. Her backhand change is deadly for an offspead pitch. Interesting Hillhouse states peel should be easy but my dd struggles with the pitch.

Not sure if this comment was intended for me. If so.........Are you asking me? Or telling me?.........

I'll say this. Anyone who believes the hand can actually roll over the top......and DOWN THE FRONT of the ball........AND BE DELIVERED FORWARD toward the hitter......Has never pitched a day in his/her life........

With "roll drop", the hand actually travels UP THE BACK of the ball to a position just before the very top of the ball.......

IF you were to actually get your hand ON TOP the ball and try to throw it foward you'd throw it into the ground.......IF you actually got your hand DOWN THE FRONT of the ball.......IT WOULD STICK IN YOUR HAND........

The roll drop is a faster pitch because I/R is what you use to run the hand up the back of the ball......Vs. Peel drop that uses a "waving up" action to impart spin........Which a form of snap, but is much slower and less powerful then the I/R snap......

That said, I find the peel is harder for most of my students to throw effectively. The rollover generally is a more user-friendly method. And a little less speed on the ball helps the ball to break downward.

Correct.....Because it's a more "natural" motion.......You got that part right........

Are we sure that some are not confusing the 'Flip change' for the 'Roll over drop' here. It is sure sounding like it from the descriptions I am reading. The Flip change has always been confused as a type of 'Drop' in my area. I dont recall ever seeing a roll over / turn over drop thrown with 'very good speed', decent speed yes, but not very good. The peel drop would always be a little faster.

If the pitcher used both the peel and turn over and the pitcher could hit low to mid 50's with their fastest pitches, the peel would be 50 and the turn over 45 or 46. JMO.

A "flip drop" or "flip change" are off speed pitches..........

Roll Drop, when thrown properly can/should be thrown as hard as any other high velocity pitch......

Maybe I need to give you a "Roll Drop" lesson big fella.................:p

From the arm motion I am seeing here, I would expect nearly bullet spin and yes, good speed with that motion. The ones I hqave seen in this area, however, are a little more pronounced with the over the top like motion and are a little slower. Mybe we have different variations of the same thing.
