I saw some numbers from a local JUCO pitching clinic. Thought it was interesting that the better pitchers threw their curve ball and one girl threw her turnover drop ball harder than her fastball. Screwball was the same speed as the fastball. They didn't chart rise for some reason. The average pitchers were much slower with these pitches.

Not sure what the reasoning is but my dd (16 y/o) tends to throw her screwball and curve slightly faster than her fastball. She says she brings her drag leg through faster with these pitches. Not sure how or why and I don’t see it on video but it’s what she feels she does.

Remember when you look at some of these numbers that they don't chart whether the pitch came in and had a sharp, late break. Usually the kid says "I'm throwing a" whatever and they mark down the speed. No one disqualifies the pitch if it doesn't break.

The increase in speed could be the extra effort to try to spin the ball fast. Just more attention paid to the end of the pitch than with the fastball. Not saying that's true in every case, but it can be true in some.

That makes sense too, Ken. There’s probably more effort behind the spin pitches in my dd’s case as opposed to the FB.

My wife helped sign everyone up for the camp. I came up and picked my 9 year old son up for his basketball game and saw her instructing but didn't get to meet her. She is awesome. Loved her watching teach. Worked with my DD a lot on screwball. My son was the one in the coaches offices all day. LOL. He thinks it's his office.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of speeds were being listed? thanks

Most pitchers are going to have a natural motion that lends itself to one pitch or another, so that pitch may get a little extra "whip" during follow through.

For some reason the camp didn't have as many kids this year. Around 30 kids total for pitching and I didn't look at all the numbers but picked a few out. My DD is 12. DD top pitch was 52 with curve ball and 52 with drop ball. She has hit 54 with her FB but only 51 on the day.

14 year old in her group was 54 on her curve ball. 52 with her fastball.

11 year old hit 50. Not sure which pitch

10 year old 41 was with her FB.

15 year old was 58 with her curve ball. Hardest that I saw.

Last year they had older girls and a D1 commit at the camp. Much younger girls this year. I did leave before it was over and may have missed a few.
