Was thinking about a post I read elsewhere and the guy was saying his dd had 4 or 5 pitches. I instantly had the goofy thought that my 9 yo has also mastered 4 pitches- too high, too low, too inside and too outside ;)

LOL. In my observations of 9yos, you're on the right track. :)

When someone says their kid "has ___ pitches", it usually means this is the number of pitches they are currently working on developing, with various levels of success. IMO, you don't "have" a pitch until you can throw it, in a game, on any count, with reasonably consistent accuracy to the intended spot, and the pitch does what it's designed to do (curve, drop, etc). Until then, it's a work in progress.

I throw windmill to my 9 YO DD and I have 2 pitches: Strike, e.g. any pitch she swings at regardless of location. Ball, e.g. any pitch she doesn't swing at regardless of location. ;)
The best is when she uses the argument, to prove that a pitch was a ball, "look Dad where it landed"..after it hit the mat behind her, bounced twice and rolled to the side.

I second this. Our goal is usually 8/10 in practice with a std deviation of accuracy (1/2 ball width around). In games it usually yields a overall 3rd-deviation and the desired results.

Reminds me of when DD2 was first starting out pitching. Someone asked the DW how many pitches DD2 had. My wife looked at him and said 2.....A ball and a strike.........

DD is 12 and really thought my DD had mastered her curve ball at 11 and had a hard time throwing her drop. Curve now is 50/50 and drop is pretty good most of the time. Change is either high level or terrible. Will drive you insane. Lol

I was able to keep up with the COM discussions - if we start talking std dev, I’m raising the white flag - I’m much better with the statistics on the back of a baseball card than the ones from a college textbook!

I just watched a FB post of a 9yo with 4 or 5 pitches.... LOL
coach said curve... fast ball outside.
screw... inside fast ball
drop... low pitch

I need glasses now from the massive eye rolls that have caused me strained vision.
