I know the rules for the softball pitcher well. I would like to ask that it would be possible to introduce the set position, used by pitchers in baseball, also for softball. This solution would make teaching and learning of windmill mechanics easier, and the pitcher would be right on the power line without making mistakes. The pitch would be more hidden for the hitter. It would be more difficult to make the steals by the runner on the bases. Apoligize for my english. Thanks PinoSide Windmill Long Circle.jpg

If you wanted to slow pitchers down and make them less effective this is the way to go. As for it making it harder to steal, I am not sure you are familiar with the rules as what you describe would not have a positive impact, In fact it would make it easier to steal due to the increase time of flight.

Base stealing:

The rules say that the runner cannot leave the base until after the ball is released.

In a game, a runner doesn't start moving off the bag when she sees the ball leave the pitcher's hand. The runner starts her movement when the arm points straight up at 12.

So, "pitching from the set position" would have zero effect on base stealing.

I cant remember her name... but there was a girl who played for Auburn a few years ago that pitched like this. Got minimal mound time, played a lot of 1B

From a study carried out by publmed.gov on biomechanical comparison of the fastball from wind-up and the fastball from stretch to professional baseball pitchers. this are the conclusions:

The pitching biomechanics between the wind-up and stretch fastball showed no statistical differences in joint kinetics, kinematics, or timing, and clinically insignificant differences in ball velocity.

Of ourse I understand the difference in movement between the two sports.

From this study it was recorded that some pitchers pitched faster from the set position than from the windup position.

I think it is more useful to be able to use the set postion in softball is much easier to learn, there is more control in pitching and also for another reason:

Less to do = Less to screw up

So Cal
Isn't there a rule requiring both feet to be in contact with the pitching plate at the beginning of delivery?

Do you have a link to this study?
