DD took almost 2 months off in July/Aug when the other kids were all playing school ball. Unfortunately during that time, she had a massive growth spurt (she went from cute tween to full grown woman, appearance wise, in that not-quite-2-months) and hurt her ankle. Came back a huge mess, pitching wise. Usually we take Dec off, and she's still been on light duty, but she's not getting a real break this Dec.

We liked to shut down any softball (pitching and hitting) activities between Thanksgiving and New Years, but DD would continue to do core strengthening and conditioning over the Holidays, although not as frequently.

DD had her last pitching lesson for the year on 12/5. She threw some BP at team practice this past Sunday, and is scheduled to throw for 30 minutes tomorrow. That's about 60 minutes total for the month of December, so not a complete break but a very light load. Back to four days a week in January.

She threw some BP at team practice ....

Shuddered when I read this. Pitched to or threw “batting practice”? DD and my team pitchers NEVER throwing batting practice. Pitchers should train with the mentality of not letting hitters hit the ball, not grooving it. When my pitchers (rarely) throw at practice its a competition. Signs called and tying to get batters out...game simulation. If you want to groove it then front toss it from behind a screen. I’ve had many PCs tell me this in addition to the NUMBER ONE reason we don’t do it - seen 3 pitchers get smoked by batters. No chance in risking that -absolutely not worth it. Had one genius coach that put an L screen up and had full pitching behind it....one girl got drilled by a ricochet off it and another girl wasn’t paying attention to how close she was and on her follow through hit the frame and fractured a finger and was out 8 weeks.

Sorry...know you didn’t ask for my opinion but felt compelled to give it after I quit convulsing...

I get you, but sometimes we have our pitchers pitch to our girls. They don't groove it, aren't asked to groove it. They are out there to face live batters and do their best to get the ball by them.

Our batters are there to work on hitting off a live pitcher, rather than a coach or a machine. I'm of the mind that it can be a useful exercise if done right. While I'd rather do friendlies, sometimes that's not possible.

Totally kosher with that. Some pitchers are afraid they will hit their teammates....mine....your a$$ better move if it gets away from her....she has no remorse

DD last pitched the Monday before Thanksgiving. She will not pitch until January 2. So roughly 6 weeks. That gives her about 4 weeks to get ready for team practice. She is currently a freshman in college.

Yeah, when my daughter expressed interest in pitching (4 months ago) I wondered how she'd react to plunking someone. She hit a teammate and cared so little I was almost worried she had no empathy. I told her she should say "sorry" and be a bit concerned. :)

But glad she doesn't get rattled by that.

EDIT: Maybe she plunked the girl who didn't run with 2 outs and cost my daughter a solid single to left center. hahaha

When our pitchers pitch during practice, like if half the team scrimmages the other half, their goal is to get the batter out, just like a regular game. One time a coach told my DD to give a girl something to hit and DH jumped right on that (AC at the time). She throws to better herself as well as the batters, or not at all. might as well have a coach do it.

Batting practice probably isn't the right term, just went for brevity and didn't mean to cause convulsions.

It was more of an infield practice, all of the batters were bunting. The goal was to work on communication and fielding skills for bunts, but she did strike a few girls out ;).
