    Default Land leg "giving out"

    Hey all -

My 12yo daughter told me today after pitching 2 innings in a scrimmage that she felt as though her left leg was "giving out". She insists that it's not in her knee but in the back of her leg, above her knee - but it doesn't appear to be a hamstring pull. Has anyone seen anything similar to this before? She's icing it tonight. Thinking about getting her to the Ortho for an MRI this week if possible.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Yes, definitely seek advice from a medical professional. More than likely it's something minor but better safe than sorry.

12 is a growing spurt age. If there is no pain I would focus more on strength training in areas feeling weak or giving out. If there is pain definitely get it checked out. Dd has been going through different issues around joints lately she is 12 she just went up another shoe size and 2” taller. Bones are growing and sometimes muscles are slower to catch up.

I’d have it checked out asap with no stretching, exercises or anything else until a doctor looks at it.

Has she had a recent growth spurt and/or is she tall for her age? DD had similar pain at 11 and it turned out to be a slipped growth plate. If caught early they can fix her no problem. It’s serious enough though that they admitted her that same day and she had surgery the next morning. Don’t want to scare you because it probably is nothing. Just not worth risking her career or future health if it is serious.

    OP here:

    Thanks you all.

So we went to the Ortho this morning and doc ruled out any ligament damage (whew). When he was doing his examination he pressed in and around the knee and she admitted to him that there was some pain there. He said that he couldn't rule out a meniscus tear so he ordered an MRI. Will hopefully have that ruled out soon and then we can try to figure out why her hamstring up to her hip hurts.

She has grown a bit but nothing crazy. She has really upped her leg drive recently which has taken her speed up to 53 - 54 mph from 49 - 51. I guess it's possible that that leg drive causing her to be landing at a more rapid speed could have caused a twist/tear. Will see. Crossing my fingers it's nothing serious!

I tore my meniscus last year... the pain was a burning sensation in the back of my knee. I felt weak in that leg. The only severe pain was if knelt down and the tear would "flip"... this was really bad, but on a normal day, I'd just go about my day with a very slight limp.

Was this the doctor's order or is your daughter's season over? My daughter's season still has USSSA states next weekend and PGF states the following week and she's the #1 pitcher. Not sure I can keep her off it if her MRI comes back like your daughter's did.

Yea, doctor told DD a few years ago she had to stop for a little while.

Me: Is it going to cause more damage if she keeps going?
Doc: No, but it will not heal until she stops. If she wants/can take the pain should be fine but will have to be shutdown eventually.

Like doctor cares but bad habits develop if you push it. All fixable and different.

Hate that hole, you can not fix it. Change as needed and do land in it.

Not sure what no running after 1st means.
