I was looking for some constructive criticism on my 9 year old daughters pitching. She has been pitching for 10 months now. Once a week. We just got involved with travel ball which is making it difficult to keep seeing her pitching coach because both mine and his schedules are hectic. Wanting to see how my daughter is looking to you guys, if we should stick with trying to work out time seeing her current coach or try our luck with Someone else. Also, I should mention I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to softball. I stumbled upon this site a couple of months ago and have really enjoyed learning a little. Any tips, constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated.

I think she looks good for just getting started. 1st thing I would address is her throwing arm. Right now she's is pushing the ball at release, she should be pulling the ball down and into release. Try and keep her hand under the ball down the back side, show the ball to the catcher above her head, like she is doing, then palm to the sky, lead with the elbow. I'll add another gif to look at, and some links to a few youtube videos that will explain a few things. Great site, very knowledgeable posters here that will get you headed in the right direction.

There is a lot of good going on. My daughter is about to start her 4th year pitching. She has come a long way. When folks ask me my thoughts on their DD learning to pitch, I give the same answer, "teach her to throw underhand". We teach boys to throw overhand and then they learn to pitch overhand. We teach girls to throw overhand and then try to teach them this very complex underhand motion that requires a ton of coordination and body control that my DD did not have at 9 and 10 years old. I wish i had spent time playing catch underhanded without the full circle. Then she could watch me learn with her. Then, once she could play catch underhand, introduce the full motion.

Actually that’s really smart, the whole underhand throwing.. my 3 year old tries to throw the ball like that sometimes and I will tell her to throw it the other way but you may be on to something here. Thank you for your input! Also, I’m not sure how to tag whoever I’m responding to in here. I thought simply replying to the comment would let the person know I was replying to them. Sorry about that!

Try "Reply with Quote." You can even edit the text so people know which part of a comment you're replying to (if it's long).

I get notifications any time someone quote-replies to something I post. I'm sure everybody else does, too, unless there's a setting they've turned off.

She needs to do a drill called "walkthroughs". This drill is the alpha and omega of learning how to pitch. My DD did this drill from the time she started throwing until she finished pitching in college.
