How much velocity is needed to "hear" the ball?

I think the easy answer is somewhere above 50 depending on the spin rate and the ball's seams. I'm hearing it more and more often from my DD as she is more consistently now in the high 50's and really working both her drop and rise.

What you are hearing is the seams against the air, so it is a combination of both velocity and spin. Many moons ago I saw Nolan Ryan throw at Comiskey Park in Chicago. Could hear his fastball from the stands behind home plate. From the upper deck!

Quite a coincidence- how about that Kopech kid! The video of his pitches looks altered.

I think anything around 50 with good spin has a sound to it. I have caught one girl form my bucket who was in the low 60's and it has a different sound for sure. I would describe it more as a sizzle.

Just curious if anyone has any new data on this. My daughter has started throwing harder recently and now I can hear the air sizzle with her fastball pitches. It's pretty cool. I haven't clocked her recently but I thought she was throwing mid 40s. I see several responses stating this sounds starts in the 50s. Could this sizzle be coming more from her spin rotations instead of velocity? I really don't think she's in the 50s yet but could be wrong. Just curious.

I seem to recall seeing a lot of spin on the throws of the catcher when I first started hearing the ball, so it likely involves spin as well. No hard data to back up my impression :).

I agree with around 50 and 1200 RPM+
No hard data, but I catch many of my pitchers and that's when I see/hear it. For reference I tend to start them on a change-up when they get to about 45 and movement when they hit about 50. (Cruising - not a 1 off)

I am with @corlay 47-49. Like you, I started hearing sizzle when I was pretty sure my dd was not hitting 50.

i watched Keely Rouchard and Montana Fouts pitch in the same year (2022) in the same stadium. both throw 68-70+. Keely's ball had much more hummmm.
