I'm pretty sure when my DD's PC does this with her the string is right at the front edge of the plate at the knees. Or possibly up to 12" in front of the plate. I'm not a 100% sure. But certainly not more than 12".

I typically set a Chinese jump rope pulled taught across two stands (2 batting tees will work) at approx. 3 feet in front of the plate. The goal is to barely clear over the rope and you'll really see the dropping movement as the ball crosses the plate. For drop ball work, set the height of the rope at the knees
