I am looking for advice before I go and get a pitching coach on how plausible it would be for my 11yo DD to start pitching lessons and learn how to pitch. She played around with it a bit a few years ago and decided that she didn't want anything to do with it. She has talked about it a bit here and there and with her being a lefty I don't know if that helps or not in softball.

Thank you to all who pass along advice!

Every girl is different as far as how quickly they pick things up but she can absolutely start lessons and learn how to pitch. Ive seen 12-13 year olds pick it up pretty quick (3 weeks). My DD is a lefty also and her ball runs away from righties which is very effective

Take the lead from your DD. You said she talked about it a bit. That sounds more like curiosity instead of a real desire to pitch. Kids who really want to pitch will show a strong interest in it and it usually doesn't fade. It takes a lot dedication, work and patience for a girl to become a good pitcher. Many kids express a desire to pitch. When the reality of how hard it is to do well and the commitment it takes, most give it up.

One way to gauge her interest is to take her to a group clinic or two. If the pitching bug bites her you'll know soon after.

At 11 you’re slightly behind, but if she loves it and is dedicated she’ll catch up and surpass others quickly. As far as being a lefty pitcher, you just doubled her chances at a college scholarship.

Liken it to having a baby. 9 months of development before one is ready. That's what it took for my daughter, but she started @9U. My best advice would be to find a good pitching coach and get informed. Being a pitcher is like being a softball player x 2. It also takes a certain personality and mental fortitude to be a pitcher. But as I was once told, nobody cares who played first base during a memorable game, but they all remember the pitcher. And, yes, being left is definitely an advantage.
