I don’t expect to see an example of a side-by-side drop-ball "cut-in" versus "cut-out". Such a side-by-side comparison would be virtually identical in appearance and would not support what some folks believe.

My belief …

It is finger pressure … but it need not be a different finger between the “cut-in” versus “cut-out” … nor need it be a different portion of the same finger.

How the finger kisses the ball good-bye makes the difference. The actual cutting action on release is what is important.

Another way to think about finger pressure.......is it the fingers applying pressure to the ball or is it the ball applying pressure to the fingers?
There are a few grips I know of that the finger actually creates a pressure into the ball.....but in most cases there are other factors that cause the ball to put pressure on the fingers or on certain fingers or on certain parts of the finger or certain amounts of the fingers. Things such as arm speed, centrifugal force, speed of IR or degree of IR, hand angularity, cupping of the fingers/minimal cupping of the fingers, arm angularity, etc. etc.
I think that for best true/controllable movement you would be better served paying attention to that factors list than trying to "squeeze the crap out of ball with one finger or another".

Rick, I appreciate you commenting here.

Agree that squeezing the ball should not be the goal.

Also agree that the action of the windmill will itself have the ball pressuring the fingers/hand.

That said, IMO it is the finger-to-ball pressure at 'release', and the relative direction of that pressure between the finger & ball at 'release', that leads to controllable movement. To me, that final pressure is more the finger applying pressure to the ball, than the ball applying pressure to the finger ... and this IMO is what leads to control.

Drop spin, in and out. I'm thinking one is a regular IR release, one is a rollover type release. Just a matter of finger pressure up the inside or outside of the ball

What I am suggesting is that the overall windmill action can be identical, and that simply the final finger pressure cutting the ball at release can dictate inside/outside direction of a drop-ball.

Just messing around with this, I can change the axis, the key with the spin is whether I keep the middle finger inside or outside the middle of the ball. Do you see more of a shouldered finish for running the ball away from rhb from rhp?

Thank you. I believe I understand what you are doing. I'll need to go for a workout and see if that works for me ... and also to answer your question about the shoulders.

Just to confirm ... for you, the ball is coming off of your middle finger. Is that correct?

My index finger is dominant and I tend to have the ball coming off of my index finger.

For me, at this point in time, my index finger is what is putting the final pressure/spin on the ball. Moving the ball away from a RHB is natural for me. Moving the ball away from a LHB has me cutting 'towards' the inside of the ball ... not that my finger is inside, but the direction of the cut is towards the inner half.

I feel the ball in my index finger, but I believe for me the middle is dominant player. I feel like it's how you let the ball come off the fingers during pronation, either let that dominant finger work inside or outside.
