One other thing to keep in mind is if you bring the ball up too quickly on the front side, the momentum you've generated is likely to cause you to carry the ball back too far so your elbow is straight/locked on the downswing rather than the upper arm pulling down independently of the lower arm with the elbow bent, as Chris describes.

Absolutely! Backswing affects timing. Without proper timing you cannot increase velocity. Very often timing issues can be resolved by simply increasing/decreasing the backswing.

We teach slow to the load and then at 12 explode.
So how do you know to increase or decrease the backswing?

3 pitchers that have gone from DD’s pitching coach to different colleges have been told to lose the backswing.

DD lost her backswing this year in college. Coaches thought hiding her gripe was important and she is now working to increase her leg drive without the natural "squat" motion created during the backswing.

This comment got me thinking. My DD still struggles at times with a straight/locked arm on the downswing. I've never considered this as a potential cause. I don't think it is the case for her but how can one tell if the upswing is too fast? Not sure how to teach slow to the load and explode at 12.
