I don't dispute this at all, but the crazy thing: If I had a low-50s high school pitcher who could throw strikes at will (and not just right down the middle), I probably wouldn't need any fielders other than a catcher. Maybe a first baseman just in case someone laid down a bunt by accident or something.

The different levels of play at different ages are quite remarkable.

Really? Even if it's just a straight fast ball? We're just 12U (travel) but it seems those girls who just have a fastball are getting hit pretty well, even when they're fast.

Team plays 12U B class and one pitcher throws 51-53 (ace), one a little harder but not as good overall, and DD that is 47 to 49 is the number 3. We have come in 1st or 2nd in every tournament this season.

Off topic but if your team is taking 1/2 every tournament, have they played up in 12A? I would think that any team that places that high in every tournament should move up a class to challenge themselves.

STRIKE3 that video is hilarious,

Thanks to all for the input and seems my DD is on the average side which is great to know.
Appreciate all the examples of pitchers speeds and ages... lots of great stuff to take in and form an opinion.

Any comments on how I had her train this off season?
Does it seem like a good plan any suggestions on that aspect?
After a season do pitchers typically take off a month or so to rest?

Again Appreciate all the knowledge you all provide on this board.

I don't think people are lying when they say there are girls that throw quite a bit harder than what you posted at those ages. We played the Beverly Bandits 10u team last fall. They have a girl that was throwing a consistent 52-54 mph and another that is throwing 50-51 mph. When you get to big tournaments like PGF Nationals it will be pretty common to see 50 mph pitchers at the 10u level.

If I remember correctly last year at 10u PGF Nationals there was a girl throwing high 50's and may have been hitting 60 mph. Not saying it is common but there are some very hard throwing girls at 10u here and there.

To the O.P. I believe you daughter is doing pretty darn well in terms of speed, especially considering she has only been pitching 8 months. From what you stated she is really gaining speed quickly. Keep up the hard work, and good luck.

Agreed. While it is definitely not the norm they are out there. I would agree with some of the average charts being posted. DD is in her 4th year of 10u and I’ve seen probably 400 games and at least that many different pitchers across 5 states. Seen 3 pitchers in a game that were 50+ with my own eyes and pocketradar/stalker. DD cruises at 48 and has touched 51 (I only clock her a few pitches once a month). When her movement/offspeed pitches aren’t working she gets the crap bashed out of her —even by first year teams. Speed is everything at the lower levels and much less important as they age up if they can’t locate and mix.

One thing to keep in mind is there’s a huge difference in practice speed and actual pitching speed. Plenty of 12 & 13 yo’s can hit 60 when all your they’re doing is throwing as hard as they can. Measure them in a game and it’ll be 2-5 mph slower.

It is possible that some of the speeds that I hear of happened in practice or at a lesson somewhere, but I just don't see the 50 mph speeds in real tournament games, outside of the examples you provided. The 10U pitchers on the top local teams that I see and have gunned usually top out at 45-46, and one of those teams finished 5th or 6th in PGF last year. I don't like to use averages because the speeds of each team's pitchers can vary widely, but 41 is around the mean, and 35 is at the low end for second year 10u players. In 12U, some of the 13 year olds are throwing a lot harder, but I don't think they are close to 60.

Live in a rural area and travel 2:30 at least to play the best we can. Played 14U once and placed 2nd. Will play more 14U but not ready for it when some are missing because of school ball at the moment. We are a good B class team. Real good for our location.

Age still has a lot to do with it. Number 1 throws 53 tops and is a November 12 year old. Number 2 is touch harder but 13 Jan. Number 3 will be 12 in April.

Also take any speed you don't clock yourself with a grain of salt. I've had a TON of parents tell me their kid pitches 50+ or their team's pitcher pitches 50+. In 10U I think I clocked two, in 2 years. I haven't done much clocking in 12U but now I hear about 55 and 60. I haven't seen anyone even close to 60 in 12U yet. The radar guns vary in accuracy and how you use them matters too. There's no speed a parent could name that would impress me until I see it for myself.
