I had to add the IP's galore part to keep this post in the pitching forum:D

I was waiting for someone else to comment but haven't seen it yet surprisingly so gonna go ahead and post.....

Did anyone watch Game 1 and 2 of the Georgia/Florida game this weekend? WOW!!!! I need to go back and look but I don't know how many IP's were called on a certain pitcher from Florida AND the fact Georgia hit 3 home runs in a row on the same pitcher. Yes, 3 batters in a row hit one over the fence in Game 1. Not to mention that the same pitcher from Florida got pulled and started Game 2 and then went on to get run-ruled in game 2.

I say all this not to point fingers or anything like that. I know we can have active discussions on IP's and we have a thread that I believe is the most responded to in the history of DFP about this same Florida pitcher. I am not here to say good or bad but we all know a duck is a duck and not the Oregon type.

All that said, I found myself wishing this girl had the correct mechanics and pitched legally. She would have been just fine and probably still very dominant and not have the recently found pressure and frustration which IMO is completely warranted. Yes, I am glad IP's are getting called no question about it and I am positive it is of no shock to her, the coach, or her family. It's been talked about by everyone for along time now. It appears, at least for now, that it has finally started to catch up and I just hate to see ANY young lady suffer because of what COULD have been if an adult had made the change awhile back. Will she go on and pitch in the Olympics, YES, most likely and I believe it won't matter there with International rules but I far from an expert on those so could be wrong. I just hate to see a talent like that not helped or told earlier in her career to do it the right way.

Lastly, I could start a new thread on this but Aleshia Ocasio continues to amaze me. That kid has impressed me in so many ways, so many positions, but I love that kid on the mound most and then with a bat in her hand. Walton is more than lucky to have her and she is nothing but class.

Back to Watch Espn.........

Yes, games 1 & 2 were fun games to watch (unless you're a Gator fan).

I actually think Barnhill (you're allowed to mention her name...she's not Voldermort) only had 1 IP called before the back-to-back-to-back HRs in the 1st. The IP was called on what would have been the 3rd out, so given what happened with the next 3 batters it's fair to assume it flustered her. In game 2, she was pulled early - 3rd inning after DiCarlo hit her her 3rd HR in 2 games putting the Bulldogs up 3-1 - so can't really pin the run-rule loss on her.

Generally agree with your thoughts on the IP calls that are now finally being made. Many pitchers will need to learn to adjust...just like many batters are needing to learn to adjust to the "out of the box" rule. Difference there is that the impacted pitchers need to learn how to be legal after always being illegal, while for the batters they need to learn a "new legal".

I am going to throw in my 2 cents worth in this discussion.

I am not taking anything away from Georgia, they hit the ball extremely well and deserved to win. They could have beaten Florida regardless of the IP called. This was an away game and the Umpires were not (wink wink) intimated by Walton. But, Barnhill was still pitching Illegal on most pitches, even after the IP was called. I didn't watch the whole game only parts and I think they only called one IP on her. She tried hard to keep her foot down but still leaped and re-planted. That is when she lost her confidence and control.

How will she come back from this IDK. Barnhill is only one of the many Illegal pitcher pitching today. I hope that all illegal pitchers take notice of what is going on and change(unfortunately, it might be to late to change this season). I also hope it is not just being called now and than stop when the tournament(s) comes around. The NCAA rules committee is to blame for this.

Man, the TV announcers really do stink, don't they?

The last of the 3 back-to-back-to-back HR's by Mahlena O'Neal,
the pitch was a high/outside riseball, that O'Neal went up to tag over the fence.
So predictably, the announcer, on auto-pilot, immediately commented on how Barnhill "left that one in the zone and paid the price"

Why is it that every time an HR gets jacked,
the pitch is always described as being left "fat"?
Can the announcers not see the pitch locations well from their vantage point in the booth?
Sometimes a batter goes and gets a well-placed pitch, and STILL hits it over the fence.

Sooooooo frustrating.
Reminds me of anti-Cosell sportsfans back in the early 80's,
who would turn off the sound from the TV broadcast, and supplement with the radio broadcast of televised sporting events he commentated.
Except as softball fans, we do not have the luxury of choosing from alternate commentary for these games. lol

I watch a lot of games at work or even at home without volume. Some of the announcer are, well lets say not very good. Prefer to just watch the game.

There is just such a huge disparity in TV announcers knowledge of the game! When you have Michele Smith and Amanda Scarborough calling a game, things are considerably better since they played the game. Half the time, it is a young former player (fresh out of college) and an older gentleman who sounds like he has never seen a yellow softball in his life. Those games are the worst. I love watching LSU and ULL because they almost always have a former coach in the booth who knows what the heck she is talking about! :)

These Bulldogs are on fire this year! It seems like Coach Lu has really surrounded herself with some great coaches the last few years and has done a good job recruiting, and is now reaping the fruits of that labor.

And her softball career just came to an end. They have put her on the injured list, and she is no longer playing. Announcers during Alabama/Florida game last night said she has an injury and will no longer be playing this year. I am so sad for her and UGA!

Nonononononononononono no! I haven't seen Amanda say anything out of line, but Michelle "Late breaking riseball" Smith is really bad. I find her extremely frustrating as she attempts to keep her old school misconceptions alive. whenever I hear a broadcaster speak about something and they are completely wrong, it is usually her. She has an impressive resume that keeps her employed as a broadcaster, but her ignorance of the game is voluminous!
