The last two posts have me spinning! What just happened?!?! Are we talking drop or rise?
Sorry gentlemen, Ken. I missed the boat. As soon as I read bullet spin, I just presume we are talking about someone trying to throw a rise ball.

jday, keep it simple. Bullet spin is caused by her turning her hand OVER or under the ball. She's twisting her wrist at the release, it's that simple. The fix is USUALLY to use more elbow to whip through. The more the elbow whips and goes fast, the impossibility of the wrist turning happens. The wrist will naturally follow the elbow's course.

It's easy to do at 9 o clock but I wouldn't recommend doing 9 O'clock. thats probably teaching her to come down without use of the elbow and FORCE the wrist to turn.

Bottom line: Forget 9 o clock. If you're going to do a slingshot style, 12 o'clock pitch in warm up, make sure she whips that elbow through and the hand follows through ACROSS the body. This will eliminate bullet spin in a NY minute. The harder the snap, the less chance the wrist has to turn. So focus on the follow through and you'll see 12-6 spin.

Maybe we're talking semantics here...but how does the elbow "whip?" It's not at the "end" of the chain...

The elbow leads the hand thereby creating the lag position that creates the whip from proximal to distal.

With all due respect, can you clarify? Post a video of what you mean?

Yes, there is a lag with the elbow... just like in throwing a baseball. And just like throwing a baseball, the elbow leads the way and is the first thing to "snap" or whip. Post a video? Just watch any of the world's top pitchers on Youtube. You'll see they lead down with the elbow and whip it across the body. There is not a single world class pitcher I can think of that doesn't do that when they are throwing hard.

I won't agree with your description. The elbow is the fulcrum. The hand is WHAT lags and whips. Look up type 3 levers.

The ELBOW does NOT whip across the body. Acceleration via deceleration. Proximal to distal.

Do you see the elbow moving ACROSS THE BODY in this clip?

The video cuts off before it shows it but it looks to me like he hand is moving across to the left. So yes.

Perhaps I mispoke about what is "lagging". The elbow leads the way. the ball is lagging. Is that how you see it too?

Yes the ball\hand lags...sure...upstream the elbow lags...its the sequence or "order of operations" that creates the whip in my world...

I'm not arguing with you...it's more for clarification for the readers...we met a few years ago at softball CON and had a similar conversation. If you recall the conversation...you said to me "when in doubt, think about what you would do\how you would move if you were throwing overhand" We were in the lobby after your speech...CP

The concept of elbow snap used to elude me as well, but I took some time to play with the feel of snapping the elbow. When I think about what I know happens based on hundreds of hours of watching slow motion video—elbow snap doesn’t work for me. However, if I feel for elbow snap—it makes complete sense. Since that revelation, I now use it as one of several cues I use with new kids. An email Bill sent me years ago about how to get a drop to really move has always stuck in the back of my mind—now it makes complete sense to me. The same feel works for teaching overhand throwing.

The feel really clicked for me the other day at the river. This throw REALLY sucqued, but I could still feel the elbow snap.

I have a faint recollection of that meeting. Coaches clinics like that are always neat, at the end "Are there any questions?" Nobody raises a hand. Then afterward I'm bumrushed by people with questions. Many are the SAME question.

I think we are saying the same thing, I just mispoke by saying the elbow lags.
