That time of the year again for us...school ball. Tryouts start this month on the 14th. Should be interesting. Last year, D team surprisingly got knocked out of the playoffs quite early. They had the entire squad back from the prior year where they made it to the state semi-finals. Going into playoffs, they decided to bench D and bring the JV pitcher with them instead. They figured since she went undefeated and throw some no hitters in JV, she would be the better choice with their other 2 main pitchers. I was happy that she got the opportunity but sad that is was at D's expense.
We had 6 girls graduating, 2 of them pitchers. Last year JV will be bringing 2 solid pitchers to go alone with the other 3 returning varsity.
Since last year school, D had a lot of success with travel. Her team moved up into the A bracket...the pitchers average only 1.5 runs against them...D's batting average was .440...while her bat is good, she won't be able to compete with the power her school ball team has when it comes to batting. She said she gained an ego, I told her success will bring confidence. With this newly found confidence, hopefully her Senior year of school ball will be a great experience.

Also, they are now part of a newly formed 4A conference...it looks to be very competitive with some great teams.

We're in limbo until try-outs. Daughter is new to school and unsure if she'll make Varsity as a 10th grader. School has won State Championships on the shoulders of an elite 2 pitcher rotation. That pitching remains intact at the Varsity level and should put them in-line for another run at the title. With the dominant 11th and 12 grade pitchers returning it puts my daughter as the 3rd best pitcher in their system. We've always focused on being a softball player first and foremost so, my daughter can play 8 positions with a focus on middle infield and has an above average bat. I think she'll make varsity as a "softball player" but I could see where they may keep her down at JV to be a "pitcher" for more circle time.

Looking forward to hearing updates from D's season!

Lil DD has tryouts in three weeks. I'm trying not to think about it because the varsity coaches seem pretty stoked to have her at 1st base and as a back up pitcher (3rd.) I'd be ok to see her be the #1 on JV, float for V and get circle time to help gear up for TB season. She's super jazzed about the possibility of a starting spot on V, so I'm keeping my mouth shut!

IMO it is better to play regularly on JV and get spot time on varsity then to sit varsity waiting for your spot time.

I agree but honestly my daughter has always worked her way into being a starter. Based on her ability to be a "gamer" I would envision the same at the Varsity level. In other words, give my daughter an opportunity on game day, she'll deliver to give you a reason to keep her in the line-up and eventually she'll earn a starting role.

Again, for her it comes down to circle time...it's pretty much a given that she will get VERY LITTLE circle time at the Varsity level based on the (2) other horses that they have in the stable. With that being said my daughter will get more than her share for her TB team as she's their "Ace".

HS ball is a fall sport where we're at. DD just made the decision to move to a large highschool starting in August. She would definitely have made V as a freshman at the school she is currently at (a small charter with no softball players to speak of), but she has decided she wants to push herself and compete with some better players. The school she will attend has a reputation of being a softball powerhouse so I will be thrilled if she makes JV. There is a C team - but they are pretty terrible. DD is a smallish lefty slapper (who can also hit). She has played catcher for 4 years and I know the only V catcher at the school she will be attending is graduating this year. DD has also caught a few times for the girl who will most likely be "the" V pitcher during her lessons and they work well together... but DD has also been playing center field and is loving it. It will be interesting to see how it plays out...looking forward for summer workouts to start in a couple months!

I am nervous for her - but excited as well!

Good luck to all the HS players this spring! We will be following closely to see how things go - this is new territory and we are eager to learn from experienced players/parents!

We have to wait until March 5th in Indiana. Coaching staff has had a couple of meetings and have the girls doing some conditioning. Growing very impatient by the minute. Ready to go.

March 2 we start tryouts. If we were at our public school I have no doubt my DD would make V as a freshman. But the private school she attends is stacked. If she has any possible chance of making V it would be her hitting that gets her there. On JV (which I feel she will make) she should get more playing time.
