using revfire for speed *can* be reasonably accurate,
but it is a distance-specific calibration,
and most users don't understand how to set the device,
in relation to where the ball is released from, and where it will meet the catcher's glove.

Because of this low tolerance for even minute distance variation between pitches,
it's not a very reliable speed measuring device, even in experienced hands.

May I ask what you are using it for?

They are hard to get now aren't they?

Do you like how it measures spin?

Well to be honest, the reason I want one is to see what it can do. My only other alternative is rapsodo for 3k and $500 a year. Currently I use a taped ball, and a very good camera with a good FPS to get an accuarte axis and spin rate with my students.

Yep. 3k to buy it, then $500 a year. For what I do, it's just too expensive, and I'm trying to talk the facility owner into buying one for all of us to use. Goes on deaf ears. I've already e mailed Rapsodo asking if there might ever be a consumer product on the lower end. I'd love it if they did make something affordable for the little guys.

Guys

I t has come to my attention that many of you are using the rev fire and making OUTLANDISH CLAIMS OF SPEED.

I SEE DADS AND COACHES POSTING 12 YEAR OLDS THROWING 67! The speed says 67 and the spin rate says 11 or 13.

Don't use the rev fire for speed!

Come on guys. Feel free to chime in on why the rev fore is not a good tool for speed. Or if you think it is how are you setting it up!

Thanks and sorry for the mini rant!

The distance must be correct for the REV FIRE to measure speed, and even then it is an average speed, not a top speed.

Exactly. You see speeds lower not higher because of the average calculated.
What is going on to get those kind of speeds? Lying? Setting it up to read 46' and pitch from 20'?

As phones continually advance in technology, it's just a matter of time until you can do it with a 1.99 app. Hopefully it happens while DD is still playing age.

I think an iPhone 6 or newer can do this now, along with a little math. If you know the frame rate and distance from release, you can shoot a video, count frames and get a pretty good estimate for speed. You should be able to do the same with RPS. I think the best way to pull this off would be to use a ball with one hemisphere blacked out and shot from the side.

Or you can just download an app: https://appadvice.com/appguides/show/baseball-radar-gun-apps
