This thread is why I tell every pitcher headed for college that they absolutely must have a down ball. It is the one pitch that you can get the full ball on the plate and not get hammered. It does not have to be your favorite or go to pitch, but you must have it.

Just to clarify, was your use of "down" vs. "drop" intentional? Do you include any pitch that you can successfully keep in the lower part of the zone (such as curve, low fastball, or change-up), or are you just referring to a drop ball? (Although I guess a curve could also be considered a drop ball?)

The ball and the batter do not care how it was thrown or what it is called. :) So any ball that has or is close to a 12-6 rotation and moves downward. At any level including the WCWS if you put that pitch in a teacup at the bottom 2 corners of the zone you will have a pretty good day. If you do it in TB or HS you will dominate.

Thanks for bringing this one to the top....I always get a good chuckle out of that video that Eric posted. My favorite part is the catcher framing and holding the ball a foot outside of the strike zone like it is perfect.

With our first tournament this weekend, I am hoping we don't see any of these umps! Prayers for fair, consistent umpires. Just call it both ways ump! :)
