Hello all, I just transitioned one of my pitchers from HE to IR. Speed has increased about 5 miles an hour but her RPS has gone down about four to five rotations. Anyone have an explanation for this? What RPS do college coaches for these days on each specific pitch? Thanks for your help. Drills are welcome.

I have to tell my DD all the time that throwing a ball 70 MPH will not matter if it is flat...spin matters and I will trade some MPH for some RPMs. Have her focus on the spin and stop providing speed readings. Speed comes from her leg drive and arm speed, spin comes from her wrist and elbow, so focus on those.

You JUST transitioned the girl. Give her some time to make the full transition and get the release perfected. Then go back check her again.

Have you noticed a change in spin orientation? If her spin went from a HE/forced 12/6 to a semi-spiral or spiral, I'd be ok with that. Let her get comfy wth hitting spots with IR, then teach her how to spin with IR. Betting her results will be MUCH better.

She may still be trying to force a wrist snap too. Make sure she is keeping her wrist relaxed and "allowing" it to snap rather than trying to force it to snap.

Likely the issue. I still have people telling DD to "push the ball down, then snap your wrist HARD, then point your elbow where you wanted the ball to go!"

Absolutely cannot wait to get to Rick's clinic in Fairmont in January. Problem will be when DD is using an approach that literally one PC around here understands.

Having that problem now. Not one PC in the area that knows IR. Going to have to convert a PC first, then a pitcher... lol

I understand that completely. My students often have that issue - even when they are clearly better than the kids using push the ball down/snap the wrist hard techniques. People who don't understand will try to "fix" them.

One girl's dad was telling me about when the pitchers were warming up. All the other pitchers were doing wrist flips, but his daughter wasn't. One of the Mr. Helpful dads asked why she didn't start with wrist flips and my student's dad said "because our PC says they're unnecessary and detrimental." The other dad said "Maybe you should get a new pitching coach." Of course, my student pitched a lot, with great success, and that guy's daughter hardly at all, but still he felt the need to critique.

Sometimes the best you can hope for is they just accept the results and leave her alone. Maybe Fastpitch Foundations will be successful in converting the unbelievers. We can only hope.

Hey Cass. Hope all is well...
Really low revs indicates the fingers are most likley outside the ball at release. Being that she's newly transitioned, she may be over exaggerating IR and forcing it. Film her in slo motion and pay close attention to finger placement at release.

one of the reasons you are getting lower readings is because the ball is getting to the glove faster.
