Pitchers parents need to do two things:
1) teach their child to control what they can control, the least important pitch of the game was the last one, and the most important pitch of the game is the next one.
2) teach their child the difference between an earned and unearned run.

And for heaven sakes someone explain #2 to the person keeping the book! LOL

I emphasize that with all my pitchers. Unfortunately, they still get tagged with the loss, earned or unearned. It can be very frustrating for a pitcher when they are battling a team throwing "out" pitches all game long and a routine ball gets dropped or a bad throw made that loses the game.

During DD's freshman season in college the LF had 11 errors, SS had 20 and 3B had 15 at the 20 game mark of the season. It got to the point the catcher and her decided to work more outside because the right side of the field would make the plays.

How about first pitch strikes are better thsn first pitch balls and an out is an out?

Although I agree that this is dumb if we're doling out apologies, I'd like a few since I have to ride home with the pitcher who's second baseman had 5 errors last Sunday and who's SS couldn't seem to get a throw down that was perfect, which forced said pitcher to throw a TON of extra pitches and be incredibly grumpy for our 90 minute ride home. And allowed us to lose yet again by 1. ;) :p

When my dd pitches and doesn't perform well...I say you need to work harder.....when she pitches great and errors are made behind her.... I say it all part of the game and work harder so that fielders don't have the chance to make errors. My kid better not pout about anything on the way home. Its a team sport. I feel like if a pitcher is going to complain about other's mistakes they need to play on a better team...

What does that mean? I guess I'm one of those parents. :)

If you are up 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh with two outs and your SS boots a routine ground ball that allows 2 runs to score the SS did in fact lose the game. A coach or parent would note that if they had scored more runs earlier in the game it would not have come down to that play, which is true but it doesn't change the events that transpired.

I do agree with the other posters in that you shouldn't single out players (or let your pitcher complain about lack of support even if it's true).

What I'm not following is the difference between ''costing'' the team the game and ''losing'' the game. Not disagreeing with anything per se, just got confused about that.

DD played on a team where the pitcher constantly screamed at the fielders. Blamed them for everything, never took any blame on herself. Even after walking several batters in a row she would claim she threw down the middle because she didn't trust the girls behind her. DD was the catcher. It got so bad that when the pitcher would call a time out/meeting at the mound it would be the pitcher, DD and 3rd base. DD got very good at taking all the blame on herself just to keep the pitcher happy and settle her down. 1st base, 2nd base and SS would all be in tears after every game. The coach would not shut it down because he hates conflict. He allowed her to demean and belittle the other players. The coach wanted to take the pitcher back the following year. His 6 best players told him they would leave if she came back. He let the pitcher go.

This pitcher's new team has been SO good for her. The coaches shut down her behavior from day one. They have pulled her during a game when she yelled at a fielder. She has since begged DD to come play for her team. DD gets along with her, but said she would never want to play on a team with her again.

This game is a team sport - letting one person believe they are more important than the rest of the team is not good. DD left a team where there were a lot of very good, talented players - who played only for themselves - not for the team. They never played as a cohesive team because there was too much "I" on the team. They couldn't celebrate each others accomplishments because in their minds it took away from their own.

So it's a 1-0 game in the 7th and SS makes an error and 2 runs score she cost you the game? What if P walked the 8th and 9th hitter and you got to 2nd and 3rd on a WP leading to this play. It's not the others fault at all? The batters who failed to get squeeze bunts down which could have made it 2-0 or a whole slew of other possible reasons you lost.
