Ice in between innings?

12u daughter has a new club coach. She is suggesting ice on her shoulder between innings. That sounds bizarre to me.

My daughter has been pitching for three years, never had pain or injury. She doesn't ice after pitching, though her pitching coach advocates it. My feeling is that if she consistently feels good, her body must be doing what it needs to do and there is no reason to use ice to inhibit the natural healing process after a workout. So we are not ice fans to begin with. I understand there are different schools of thought on this.

But this middle of the game thing sounds crazy to me. Wouldn't that tighten you up? Anyone ever hear of this?

Did she give a reason for wanting your daughter to use ice?

We've used ice if DD was hurting or coming off an injury, but only after she was through pitching. Not in between. If she has to back to the circle, making her shoulder muscles unnaturally cold seems stupid.

I'm beginning to think coaches should not be allowed access to ice. Icing relieves pain but the cost is reduced swelling, thus slower healing. Ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatory drugs do the same thing. Swelling helps more white blood cell reach the injury and start healing. If you ice, your kid should be finished for the day and if it's Saturday during a tournament, she won't start healing for Sunday.

So, icing can mask the pain, retard healing and set you up for long term injuries if you continue to play with cold muscles.
