Thank you! I thought that it was both stupid and potentially harmful, but needed the validation. I will tell DD to keep her ice in her water bottle, where it belongs!!

My only thought is the coach read something an "Expert" posted on the internet. I've never iced a player or pitcher unless they were injured or done for the day pitching.

Played with a future MLB pitcher than iced after warming up. The other future MLB pitcher on he team gave him heck about it. He walked around with ice on him all the time. They both had Tommy John and a second trying to make back.

It worked for Amanda on the Bad News Bears. Fortunately Buttermaker had the cooler of beer for her to use.

I've sort of been in that "I dunno" camp on whether ice was a good or bad thing, only based on varying articles I have read on the internet. But I also find the internet to be my own personal "Encyclopedia Britannica; Counter Intelligence Edition". That being said, my middle daughter was introduced to ice baths this year in college (volleyball). She said it was the most painful thing she had ever done, but wouldn't think twice about skipping them after practice during hell week (2X2 hour practices, weights, and setter practice daily for about 2 weeks). So while I get that the data sample is small in this case, I am leaning to the idea that ice should be used for recovery. But not all activity is recovery. She only ices after a game or practice now if something is aching. Teaching kids to listen to their bodies I think is critical. It is my personal belief that icing just to ice is counter productive to that goal.

Its interesting, if you read most studies now the Rest and Ice portion of RICE is being debunked. The "creator" of RICE has recently come out and said that with the current findings he even disagrees with the R and I

From Dr. Mirkin, who coined the term RICE, has on his website,

"A summary of 22 scientific articles found almost no evidence that ice and compression hastened healing over the use of compression alone, although ice plus exercise may marginally help to heal ankle sprains (The American Journal of Sports Medicine, January, 2004;32(1):251-261)."

Now I am really confused.
