In the championship game today my 11yo DD was called 4 times for illegal pitches in the 2nd inning. I thanked the umpire in-between innings for calling them because I had been after her for almost three weeks to correct what she was doing wrong. After the game I thanked the other coach.

She was called three times for leaping. It was a little nit-picky because IMO it was marginal on whether it was leaping or clearing the hole those inconsiderate right handed pitchers put in the way of lefty pitchers. Fourth time she was called for not pausing with her hands together for 1 second before pitching.

I think she'll listen to me now.

Her best friend is the P2 and had her back. My DD had her revenge. She went 3 for 3 and hit a two RBI double to bring in the runs to win by mercy rule.

PS Semi-final game was fun. Two southpaws throwing 50 in a 4-2 game.

Umpires need to understand that if they call illegal pitches in 10U, 12U and 14U it is easier to correct than it is at 16U and 18U after they have been doing it incorrectly for years...

What rule set were you playing under? In virtually all rule sets there is not requirement for the hands to pause after coming together. He may have been correct on calling the leap, but unless you are playing under some obscure rule set he made up the rule about the hands having to pause after coming together.

USA/ASA. Rule 6.1.E 'The pitcher shall bring the hands together for not less than one second and not more than 10 seconds before releasing the ball'.

I didn't see it, but the umpire may have claimed she didn't simulate taking a sign after stepping on the pitching plate. My DD has always kept the pace moving as a pitcher. In 8u she had several 3K sub 2 minute 40 second half innings.

I'm trying to get her to step on the pitching plate with the ball in her glove to force the 1 second pause.

The original post said she was called for not pausing with the hands together for 1 second, it did not say she was called for not having the hands together for 1 second.

The rule says nothing about the hands pausing when they come together, it is perfectly legal for the hands to be in motion when they are brought together. As for the 1 second, it is generally accepted the hands touching together satisfy the requirement of the hands coming together for 1 second. There is no way for an umpire to measure a minimum of 1 second, if you were to put a stop watch on pitchers you would find a very large number of them do not actually have the hands together for a full second.

My comment was based on your original post of her being called illegal for not pausing for 1 second. If you arent sure of what the 4th illegal pitch was called for then I have no idea if the umpire was correct or not. But again, if he called her for not pausing with the hands together for 1 second then he is misinterpreting the rule.
