"Ok - let's end this session with 10 pitches. Throw whatever you want, but dont tell me whats coming."

disclaimer: if your dd throws in the 60s, maybe this is not advisable unless you are very skilled, and own catchers gear.

my 13yr old DD cruises in the lower to mid-50s.
She just started learning the rise. also has a drop and a good change up.

I wanted to accomplish two things:
1. can I pick her change?
2. is her "developmental rise" an effective pitch yet?

answers: 1. No! 2. Maybe, lets try it in a game and see what happens.

This is a great way to evaluate the effectiveness of your pitcher, almost as if through the eyes of a batter. We both had fun with this. I was fooled on many pitches and this brought her great joy - and I managed NOT to take one on the nose. Bonus!

I do that with the girls I work with. But, I stand behind whoever is catching them and have them call the pitch without telling me.

While in HS, DD threw a rise on purpose when I had called a CU. She thought it was funny to see me jump and had a good laugh. After a string of expletives from me she understood that when you throw 60+ the catcher needs to know what's coming otherwise they can get hurt.

Every single pitching practice and warm up, we work on this... deception is key in an effective change up, as well as consistency in delivery of all pitches

I do this but I stand in the batter's box and attempt to time the pitch without actually swinging. Really gives me the feel of what another batter will feel like against that pitcher. I think it is a great drill!!

An older girl taught a 10 YO on our Team a knuckle ball, coach was not happy.

It was un catchable when it worked, for me anyways.

I pick girls all the time. Drives them crazy. it was the best way for me to let them know they were tipping. When i just told them they were tipping they didnt seem to care. When im standing off to the side or behind the catcher and starting calling them prior to release they got really mad. then they were willing to make changes. I should bring my brother in as there is nobody better at picking pitches than he was. He'd pick and relay it to the rest of us. Huge advantage as a hitter to know what pitch is coming or at the least eliminate certain pitches
