School officials confirmed that Hendrickson is the third player in her region to be hit in the face by a line drive in just one month.

I really don't understand this anymore... Given the increased speed and power in this game coupled with continually occurring and severe injuries to the athletes it makes absolutely no sense to go out there and stick your face in front of that ball without protection.

On a side note, has anyone else seen the new safety helmets that will be used this year across the NFL and in many collegiate football programs? Slightly larger and noticeably heavier these helmets are being widely adopted. Why? Doesn't it make those 280 lb linemen look like less of an athlete? **sarcasm for those who need it spelled out. Just baffles my mind that anyone would argue making masks for pitchers mandatory. Bet the parents and the player wish that it wasn't a choice.

Certainly it is a free choice and I'd like to see it stay that way. No one thinks twice about a player wearing a mask now like when my DD played ten years ago. A change for the better.

But, yet there are coaches who do care. Coaches that are stuck in an old way of thinking. Coaches that don't want players wearing masks.

It seems as though many pitchers will occasionally (on their own) throw the cookie that hangs or hits on too much of the plate which automatically puts them at risk for taking one right back up the middle. What I see more and more is the zone being squeezed forcing pitchers over the plate to try and get the strike call from blue. So those who spin hard and clip corners are left with the choice of walking the disciplined batter that won't bite or fatten the pitch up. I advise my DD to pitch to her strength and stay on the corners and in the river. (oh yeah and to always wear a mask!)

I'm new to the game as my daughter is only 11 and I won't allow her to pitch w/o a mask. Why would a coach not want a player wearing a mask? Please enlighten me!

Many college coaches think a mask means mental weakness. I know at a nearby BIG XII school, the coach does not like to take players that wear a mask. That's just one but there are many like that. There are also HS coaches that think this way as well.

As long as I am paying the bills, DD will have a mask.
