Daughter is a 8u player, playing on a 10u b team, she hit 40 mph today on the gun for the first time. I usually bring the gun out one time per month to see if her speed is improving. She actually hit 40 mph on 4 consecutive pitches. She has been throwing a change-up for over a year now and she is finally starting to get pretty decent control of the change-up also.

When I took the video I never thought about posting it on DFP. Had I thought of that I would have gotten some footage from a side view also. If you happen to see anything you would like to give some advice on feel free. The first 14 seconds of the video is garbage, sorry about that. Just go into the settings on YouTube and you can slow down the video to see things better.

Only because you asked...let's start off with for this age she looks like she is off to a good start but any time is a good time to start working on getting better.

I can't tell since it's a front angle but I'm about 99.9% sure her posture at release is leaning forward and from the front you can tell she is leaning to the side which is actually causing her to not get a good brush.
So cues like stand tall, keep straight might be helpful. Take a side shot on your own and compare it to this pic.

I would also figure out what is going on with her follow through she needs better front side resistance since you can tell she walks through at the end of her pitch and if she just throwing fastball that's not a fastball follow through, maybe if she was trying to put some really hard spin on the ball but even then probably should not look like this...but I'll let the real spin gurus chime in

Now did I mention the part about her doing a great job and you should be proud of her progress and to keep up the good work...again I would not have chimed in but you asked :)

Great start for 8U.

Work on the armwhip.
Her upper arm doesn't stabilize against the body for the lower to whip against.
Keep the arm and hand close to the body.
She's trying to muscle the pitch with her shoulder.

I am seeing the same stuff that you guys see as far as things to work on and I totally agree. She does look like her body is hunched over at the release. I also noticed that she did not get any BI. More like she actually tried to avoid BI since it looks like she almost tried to get her rear end out of the way of arm.

As far as the follow through goes; not sure if it looks funky because the gun was out and she might have been trying to muscle the ball or what the issue might be. I am certainly not showing her any movement pitches though.

Thank you for your helpful knowledge.

That sounds familiar.

Are we sure this isn't a change up?

No it was not a change up. I can see where you might think that though with her follow through it does look similar to a flip change. I think she might have been over exaggerating using her wrist. A 40 mph change up from a 8u pitcher would be impressive though. lol.

I need to get you guys some better video when the radar gun is not out. She does throw a change up but she puts 2 or 3 of her knuckles on the ball and there is more of a push of the ball at the release. We also messed around with a flip change but it was pretty difficult for her to get any control with the flip change, so we abandoned that pitch. 2 pitches at this age is more than enough to work on, in addition to working on trying to hit locations consistently. We also work on trying to get 6-12 spin on the ball.

I stole this GIF from another recent post. What pitch is she throwing in this GIF? Is it a drop ball?

Osorio's premotion:

I am comparing it to this even though they are very different. My daughter's follow through has a lot more of the chicken wing to it. Is this what happens because she is not getting good brush and arm whip?

She will be seeing her pitching instructor on Sunday. I will do my best to get some better video for you guys to analyze.

Thank you for your responses.

Osorio is a rise ball, curve ball pitcher. Looks like a curve to me.

Your DD is trying to power her pitch from her shoulder versus arm whip. She is IR'ing her arm, but not really pronating her formarm with arm whip.

You need to try and establish arm whip from the lock-it-in and "T" position drills. If she can't arm whip from a "T" drill, she won't be able to arm whip in a full pitch.
