are big dot and small dot just 2 different starting grips?

They can be. You can stay inside the ball on a 4-seem grip and produce the roll-off effect you see in the big dot clip above... HOWEVER... when talking about the rise ball...

the little dot is formed when the fingertips get forward (pointing to the catcher). The athlete is not losing flexion in the wrist, they are just carrying the release too far.. whether it be "missing the whip"... or at times... their torso moves the dot forward. In these cases, the ball exits OVER the OUTSIDE of the index finger.

The little dot is MUCH easier to fix... namely because of the mechanics the pitcher is using in keeping the "nose" (the narrows formed by the seems) UP. This is a key puzzle piece with the rise ball. Teaching a kid to catch the whip and not over-rotate is much easier than teaching them to lift the nose of the ball.

Over the thumb is the future of Riseballs, IMO. The thumb is the killer of all things spin related. Never have seen anything greater than 45 rps.... but as this pitch catches on, some god-given talent will throw that ball with nearly the same spin rate as speed. That will change the game.

Sign K up for 30rps @ 30 MPH, lol... Seriously though, even at the slow speed my DD throws this pitch at, the spin rate makes it look much faster than it is. It does NOT rise because it isn't fast enough, but it does something about 10 feet from the batter... almost like it hits a wall. The first time she got the axis right, I almost fell over trying to catch it. Here is a video of one that is spinning off axis, probably "bumped" by her thumb like Mike describes.

Thrown on the inside half of the plate, I can't imagine anyone hitting this thing fair. If it ever stops snowing in NY, we'll let you know.

javasource What are your thoughts on thumb-off grips? I'm thinking Fico, Wilkinson and Waldrop...

Would "knuckles" be a better cue?

Now the dark-seamed balls make complete sense to me!

Burroughs warming up. (When I first started watching, I thought she was throwing a tilted, palm-up curve.)
