My 10-year-old daughter has been pitching for about a year. She throws hard for her age compared to others in our area (mid to upper 40s) but still lacks control.

The past few weeks her "bad" pitches are consistently going inside, often to the point of hitting a batter. She thankfully is no longer having the beginner problem of throwing high.

I don't have a video to share, but what are some possible mechanical causes of pitching too far inside that we can look for once we do take some video?

Thanks for your wisdom!

I think DD set the leaque record for hit batters.

JAD mentioned in another post, get a batter or simulation of batter when she practices. Not swinging, just there.

Going to assume RHP and by "inside" you mean to the right hand side of the plate, from her perspective on the mound.

What do her hips and shoulders look like at release? DD's "miss spot" is also to that side of the plate, and it usually occurs as the result of one or more of the following, all of which can be related: (1) glove flailing to the left, opening her shoulders (2) hips opening to the plate too soon (3) legs getting too far ahead of the arm. With my DD what these cause is the arm to have to go around the body, which is out of position, firing the ball too far to the right.

Some potential things to help with this:

(1) arm speed drill
(2) focus on staying down that power line
(3) glove straight up, glove straight down
(4) keep everything aligned at the plate a bit longer
(5) depending on what is really going on; start at a pretty slow speed where she can focus on alignment, then build speed slowly in practice/warmup as things are going well. Allow her to get some confidence being able to throw strikes from shorter distance and/or slower speed; then move back/build up.

Hopefully some of that will help - just relating how I deal with DD when we see a similar problem.

Good luck!

If you are working on her getting brush interference on her side...then it would make sense that she throws harder than her peers...that she is wild...that she pushes the ball to the right when she is getting good brush on her side. My suggestion would be that she just needs to keep on throwing a lot.

Thank you all for the great advice! We will work on those things.

It's been so frustrating to watch the slow progress when other girls new to pitching step up and loop it in. They end up seeming more successful to those watching who don't know any better. I keep trying to keep the bigger perspective in mind, but that's hard for a 10-year-old. I've been hearing "she's almost there" for a while now.

But I really think she's almost there! In one inning of last weekend's game, she walked a few, hit two batters, struck out two, and tagged one stealing home. Of course, she always hits batters when she has two strikes on them! If just a few pitches went differently (and if she had a catcher who could handle her speed), I think it would make a world of difference. I will keep having faith in the process. :)
